The biggest medical fake news ever? NY Times claims that last year's flu killed 80,000 people

According to a recent hit piece from The New York Times titled, "Over 80,000 Americans Died of Flu Last Winter, Highest Toll in Years," newly released data from the CDC shows that a shockingly high number of people died from the flu during the 2017-2018 season. But did 80,000 people really die from flu -- or is this just the next stage of pro-vaccine propaganda? When it comes to estimating how many people have died from the flu each year, the science is far from exact. As the CDC itself admits, "The CDC does not know exactly how many people die from seasonal flu each year." How the CDC goes about making estimates is a convoluted process, and pertinent details are hardly reported to the public.

Questioning flu vaccine dogma

As The Organic Prepper notes, officials have said that over 180 children died flu-related deaths, and that 85 percent of those kids weren't given a flu shot. But how many of those children had compromised immune systems, were affected by another health condition, or had a hospital-acquired infection is never disclosed. The death of any child is a terrible, terrible thing -- but the idea that 155 children died purely because they were unvaccinated is unreasonable. The flu shot is a scam by design, and always has been. Based on the CDC's own estimates, flu vaccine coverage has remained fairly consistent for the last five years. It seems unlikely that a sudden increase in flu deaths could be directly attributed to a lack of vaccine coverage, when roughly the same number of vaccinations occur each year. And, as The Organic Prepper explains further:
First, it is important to point out the difference between Influenza (Flu) and Influenza-like illness. Both the flu and flu-like illnesses reveal themselves by the manifestation of the same symptoms, i.e. fever, runny nose, headache, body aches, etc. Both are caused by viruses. However, the flu is caused, logically, by the influenza virus of which there are three different types (A,B, and C) while flu-like illness is caused by a variety of other viruses. Unfortunately, the majority of individuals who manifest these symptoms and who make a trip to their medical doctor are diagnosed with the flu, with no further testing to confirm this diagnosis
The Prepper reports that in addition to these issues, flu- and pneumonia-related deaths are counted together, even though pneumonia has many causes beyond the flu virus. According to the CDC, the flu virus can contribute to bacterial pneumonia in the elderly, and this is apparently reason enough to lump them together. As the CDC explains:
Seasonal influenza may lead to death from other causes, such as pneumonia, congestive heart failure, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has been recognized for many years that influenza is underreported on death certificates and patients aren’t always tested for seasonal influenza infection, particularly the elderly who are at greatest risk of seasonal influenza complications and death.
It's estimated that 90 percent of flu deaths occur in the elderly. More shockingly, as sources note, very few deaths are directly related to a confirmed case of flu: Only 16 deaths in 2018 were attributed to a confirmed case of flu. Ultimately the "80,000 deaths" estimate is just an estimate -- and probably an exaggerated one, at that. The entire flu shot industry is a hoax, after all.
