The impact of 9/11 on the community extends well beyond the victims and their grieving families. On September 12, 2001, the Franklin Square Fire Department was called in to assist with the massive rescue and recovery effort that was just getting underway. Countless members of the department, including Gioia and Commissioners Philip Malloy and Joseph Torregrossa (then rank-and-file firefighters), spent weeks on the pile searching in vain for civilians and fellow responders who might still be alive. Today, Malloy and Torregrossa are among the thousands suffering chronic health effects. In their resolution, Franklin Square cites these devastating events as further fuel to their cause. Soon, they hope to take their initiative state-wide. As The Washington Standard reports, the U.S. Attorney's Office has recently notified the Lawyers Committee for 9/11 Justice that it would be complying with the federal statute which requires them to present the petition to a special grand jury. In their own resolution, the Franklin Square fire district pledges their support of a new investigation and "any and all efforts by other government entities to investigate and uncover the full truth surrounding the events of that horrible day.”These commissioners are sending a message, loud and clear. And if every fire district in the state of New York gets on board, the call to investigate further will become impossible to ignore. See more coverage of news like this at Liberty.news.
