"We are already hearing accusations from experts in nutrition that the food industry is copying tactics from big tobacco's playbook. Corporate social responsibility has to be more than just shiny websites stating progressive policies that get ignored," she adds.
The sugar industry is one such example of Big Food using its prowess to suppress legitimate health information. Big Sugar began its war against scientific reality back in 1956, fighting the notion that too much sugar is bad for your body with the mantra, "A calorie is a calorie" and an endless stream of pro-sugar propaganda. Studies suggest that the last 50 years of predominant research on sugar has all been tainted by the sugar industry. Big Sugar even funded research to pin heart disease and other health issues on saturated fat.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Big Food has been monopolizing research on health and nutrition for decades; whether we're talking about sugar, artificial colorants or other oddball ingredients, you can bet that the food industry is working solely to preserve its own interests.
