Tectona grandis (teak) leaf extract has potent anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic properties
In this study, researchers at
Sahyadri College of Pharmacy in India evaluated the in vitro anti-inflammatory and anthelmintic properties of
Tectona grandis, also known as teak. Their findings were published in the
International Journal of Herbal Medicine.
- Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of medicine in India that promotes the use of natural products.
- Herbal medicines have a long history of use in traditional medicine and still provide real health benefits to this day.
- These natural medicines also continue to prove their safety in modern studies.
- In contrast, conventional medications, especially those used to treat inflammation and pain, cause various side effects.
- Many patients have now turned to medicinal plants to alleviate inflammation, pain and other symptoms associated with many diseases.
- T. grandis, a member of the Lamiaceae family, is a widely known source of durable timber. It resists decay even when unprotected by paints and preservatives.
- A major exotic plant species found in tropical regions, T. grandis is said to have anthelmintic, expectorant and anti-inflammatory activities.
The researchers found that extracts derived from the leaves of
T. grandis can significantly reduce inflammation and are effective against parasitic infections. These findings further support the use of this plant as a natural medicine.
