Nancy Pelosi: Communist China is "one of the freest societies" in the world

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi surprisingly complimented China and called the country one of the "freest societies in the world" in an interview on NBC's "Today Show" with Savannah Guthrie last week. "We still support the One China policy. We go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is. There was nothing disruptive about that," Pelosi said. "It was only about saying China is one of the freest societies in the world." The said interview followed her latest Taiwan trip that triggered China's military live-fire exercises at bodies of water surrounding the island nation. Analysts are saying that it could have been a tongue slip, but political personalities denounced what she said and her statement received major backlash as "idiotic and scary." "Pelosi thinks that the communist dictatorship in China is 'one of the freest societies in the world,' which may explain why the Democrats are now emulating the same authoritarian tactics here at home, that the Chinese Communist Party [CCP] uses against their political opposition," former President Donald Trump tweeted in response to the interview. According to Missouri Representative Vicky Hartzler, China is currently locking religious minorities in mass internment camps and committing genocide against them. "But the speaker believes they are one of the freest societies in the world?" she pointed out and followed the statement with #CCP propaganda. Former White House adviser Steven Cheung also said it is disturbing to see anyone, let alone an elected official, repeat Chinese Communist Party talking points. He stated that it was almost like she is compromised. Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Rebeccah Heinrichs gave her two cents and commented that it is "very embarrassing. She had to have meant Taiwan – all the difference in the world." Meanwhile, the representative's deputy chief of staff Drew Hamill came to the rescue and told the Daily Wire that what Pelosi meant to say was "Taiwan." "The Speaker is referencing Taiwan. The Speaker's record of speaking out against the Chinese Communist Party for 35 years in the Congress is unsurpassed," Hamill added. On the speaker's official website, the transcript of the interview has already been corrected on the said part.

CCP cancels meetings on important issues with the US due to Pelosi's Taiwan visit

The House Speaker's "side trip" to Taiwan may have caused damage to the United States' diplomatic relationship with China. The CCP's foreign ministry issued a statement last week saying that they are canceling all direct communications between military leaders, working meetings between defense departments and maritime security dialogues with the United States. They would also defer all cooperation with the U.S. in regard to illegal immigrant repatriation, criminal justice assistance, climate talks, transnational crime and anti-drug program. Moreover, this cancellation of communications between military commanders in the Indo-Pacific is likely to be seen as a major escalation by the international community, as such contact is often a key tool in helping militaries avoid miscommunication or harmful accidents. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden reportedly summoned the Chinese ambassador for a reproach over the unprecedented escalations. "As China engages in destabilizing military exercises around Taiwan, the United States is demonstrating instead the behavior of a responsible nuclear power by reducing the risks of miscalculation and misperception," White House National Security Council communications coordinator John Kirby said during a press conference. Pelosi's visit sparked high voltage drama between the U.S. and China. But she insisted that her trip "in no way" contradicted official U.S. policy, which recognizes "one China" and has not officially recognized Taiwan as an independent state. (Related: China flies fighter jets into Taiwanese airspace, escalating tension following Pelosi visit.)
