Rep. Chip Roy: Fight for GOP House speaker is about stopping the DC Swamp

Texas Rep. Chip Roy said the Republican Party's fight for the House speaker position is all about stopping the D.C. Swamp. "People have been asking, 'What's the message?' I tried to deliver a message on the floor of the House that what we're fighting for are the tools and the leadership necessary to stop the Swamp from rolling over the average American who is sick and tired of seeing this town undermine their freedom, spend money we don't have and continue to violate every promise they've ever made in the campaign," Roy told talk show host Glenn Beck during the Jan. 4 edition of "The Glenn Beck Program." According to the Texas congressman, there was no real significant pushback from the House's leadership when Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell made it impossible to secure the border, took away the GOP's leverage and allowed the D.C. establishment to dictate the terms of the spending bill that American people did not want. Roy told Beck that California Rep. Kevin McCarthy had made a compromise with other GOP lawmakers mounting a battle for the House speakership. The congressman for the Golden State was eventually elected as the third-highest official in the land after a historic 15th round of voting on Jan. 7, Breitbart reported. However, the Texas lawmaker noted that a growing group of hardcore "no" votes against McCarthy had emerged following a recent GOP conference meeting. It came to a point where Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers threatened several congressmen with removal from their respective committees. According to Roy, it is important for the GOP to put its members on the House Rules Committee. He said that the committee, which he is going to be a member of, is the funnel through which all things get to the floor.

House speaker must help GOP break the Swamp

The Texas congressman and former chief of staff to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz also told Beck that the House speaker must be a trusted leader who will aid the GOP in breaking the Swamp that is destroying America. "We have to stop it," Roy stressed. "The tools we need have to give us the tools to stop continuing to do the same thing we've been doing over and over again – while every single Republican goes back and campaigns and then comes to this godforsaken town, throws our country down the drain and undermines everything that the men and women in uniform had fought so valiantly to save for our kids and our grandkids. That's what this is about." The GOP has been organizing its faction aside from having lots of conversations and meetings. Roy remarked that the majority needs a more aggressive, expanded, church committee-style effort to go after the government. "So, I think we've made headway and we're in a good place to be able to do some good things with that. But we got a lot more work that we need to do."
