Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signs law banning gender-affirming mutilations inflicted upon minors

Republican Governor Greg Gianforte of Montana has officially signed into law a bill banning transgender treatments, such as "genital mutilation" as well as puberty-blocking drugs and hormones for children under the age of 18. Montana is one of the states that recently placed restrictions on providing transgender surgeries and procedures. "The governor is committed to protecting Montana's children from invasive medical treatments that can permanently alter their healthy, developing bodies," the governor's spokesman said in the wake of the law's signing. The announcement solicited furious reactions from left-wing politicians and media outlets. Gianforte's son, who identifies as "non-binary," also urged him to drop the bill. The said bill drew national attention after Republicans punished transgender solon Zooey Zephyr for saying that the ban would put "blood on your hands." In a speech on the House floor last week, Zephyr also told her conservative colleagues that denying transition care would be "tantamount to torture." Montana House Speaker Matt Regier refused to let Zephyr speak on the House floor until she apologized. She refused to do so. Also recently signed into law by Gianforte is a bill that would make it more difficult for progressive-leaning schools in the state to punish students who refuse to call their colleagues by their preferred pronouns. "Children should not be forced to call somebody something they're not," Rep. Brandon Ler said regarding the legislation.

Oklahoma follows suit as the latest to ban transgender care in kids

On Monday, May 1, Oklahoma became the latest state to make gender transition procedures inaccessible to kids. Gov. Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 613 on that day, effectively making it a felony for healthcare workers to provide children with treatments that include puberty-blocking drugs and hormones. Stitt, who was reelected in November, made the ban a priority of this year's legislative session, saying he wanted to protect children. The bill makes it illegal to provide gender-transition medical care for anyone under the age of 18. Such treatment can include surgery as well as hormones and drugs that suppress or delay normal puberty. Last year, the governor of the Sooner State signed bills that disallow transgender girls and women from playing on female sports teams and prevent transgender children from using school bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity. "Last year, I called for a statewide ban on all irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors so I am thrilled to sign this into law today and protect our kids," Stitt said in a statement released after the signing. "We cannot turn a blind eye to what's happening across our nation, and as governor, I am proud to stand up for what's right and ban life-altering transition surgeries on children in the state of Oklahoma." According to CBS News, at least 16 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for minors: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, South Dakota and West Virginia. Republicans have been adamant about stopping transgender treatments in minors because of the possible long-term medical and psychological effects of the treatments.
