AP-NORC POLL: Biden's approval rating plummets due to his gun control, illegal immigration and economic policies as reelection bid starts

A new poll from the Associated Press (AP)-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has found that only 33 percent of American adults approve of President Joe Biden's economic management and only 24 percent say national economic conditions are in good shape. This does not bode well for Biden, who announced his reelection bid in April. The survey indicated that Biden's rating for handling of the economy remained low in a time of high inflation, a difficult housing market and concerns about a potential U.S. government debt default. It also included that American opinion is gloomy about the president's efforts on gun policy and immigration, with only 31 percent saying they approve of his performance on these issues. The AP-NORC survey involved 1,680 adults and was conducted from May 11 to 15, using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. The alarming issues of mass shootings around the country, including one at an Allen, Texas mall that left eight victims dead and seven others wounded, seemed to have affected public opinion on Biden. Even among Democrats, the poll has found that only about half approve of his handling of immigration and gun policy. Zoie Mosqueda, 24, who does not identify with any political party, said she has been frustrated with Biden's handling of gun policy and added he has fallen short on his campaign promise to implement a fairer immigration policy. "Everything feels a bit crazy right now in this economy," she said, explaining her disapproval of Biden's performance. "My older daughter is in school now, and I just worry that this lack of gun policy stuff could affect her." Fresh from the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, Biden has been in negotiations with Republican lawmakers to raise the U.S. borrowing authority to prevent a default in early June that could trigger a recession. "It would be a total catastrophe for the country if they don't agree to do something," said Bob Vought, a retired auto parts warehouse manager in St. Petersburg, Florida, who strongly disapproves of the current administration's handling of the economy. Vought lives on his Social Security benefit, and inflation is taking a toll on his personal finances. He is an independent who voted for Biden in 2020, but now sounded off being frustrated by the "out of control" rise in illegal crossings by migrants at the U.S. southern border. In the 2022 budget year, which ended in September, agents apprehended immigrants a record 2.38 million times at the southern border.

Separate MSM poll shows respondents concerned about Biden's mental capacity

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll released earlier this month showed Biden with the approval of little more than a third of Americans. According to the media website Independent, it's a very poor showing for the president, who is seeking a second term on the back of his legislative wins in the first two years of his presidency, as well as a strong showing by his party in the 2022 midterm elections. His approval rating sat at 36 percent in the new poll. In a hypothetical general election matchup for 2024, Biden's 38 percent trailed former President Donald Trump's 44 percent, with a large number of Americans undecided. At the same time, he trailed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in another hypothetical matchup, 42 percent to 37 percent. Though advancing a few points from his Republican opponents in the poll, his approval rating has still dropped six points in two months in the said survey, and more worrying than ever is the number of Americans with concerns about his mental fitness. Just 32 percent of respondents were confident that Biden has the mental acuity to still perform his job. The poll noted that 51 percent of Americans held that same confidence in 2020 when he was a candidate for office. The latest poll was conducted between April 28 and May 3 among 1,006 adults living in the United States. The margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
