A recent Quinnipiac University poll has revealed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) running as an independent candidate grabbed 22 percent of voter support in a three-way race against incumbent President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The poll, which was conducted by phone from Oct. 26 to Oct. 30 involving 1,610 registered voters, showed Biden slightly ahead of Trump with 39 percent of voter support compared to the latter's 36 percent. Among the independent voters, RFK Jr. led the pack with 36 percent support, followed by Trump at 31 percent and Biden at 30 percent. Moreover, RFK Jr. has emerged as the leading choice for young voters aged 18-34, gaining 38 percent support. "With minority and younger voters seeming intrigued, Kennedy, for now, enjoys the kind of demographic support his charismatic father and uncles generated decades ago," commented Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at Quinnipiac University. In a hypothetical head-to-head race between Trump and Biden, the Quinnipiac University poll suggests a near-dead heat, with 47 percent of registered voters supporting Biden and 46 percent favoring Trump. This closely mirrors other recent head-to-head surveys, indicating that the independent candidacy of RFK Jr. could add an unpredictable twist to what was supposed to be a showdown between Trump and Biden.

RFK Jr. attracts large-dollar donors after his independent bid announcement

The poll results underscore the potential appeal of RFK Jr. among Americans who are wary of another Trump or Biden presidency, even though the 22 percent overall support does not yet indicate a breakthrough for an independent candidate in the two-party system. A recent analysis of campaign finance records conducted by POLITICO revealed that the independent bid of RFK Jr. has attracted millions of dollars from donors who refrained from contributing in the last two presidential elections. The fundraising for RFK Jr. has raised approximately $10 million from large-dollar donors through Sept. 30, with most of it coming from voters who did not make federal donations in the 2016 or 2020 election cycles. The campaign finance records also suggest that over 60 percent of the large-dollar donors to RFK Jr. have no history of donating to either Democratic platform ActBlue or Republican platform WinRed since the beginning of 2020. More than 160 donors have given to both Trump and RFK Jr., while only a handful have donated to both Biden and RFK Jr. However, RFK Jr.'s appeal extends beyond Trump and Biden's donors, with more than 160 of his supporters also contributing to biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and another 100 donating to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Furthermore, the data reveals that over 500 of RFK Jr.'s top donors had donated to the 2020 campaign of Trump – more than three times the number of those who contributed to Biden. In other words, the large-dollar donor base of RFK Jr. leans noticeably Republican, aligning with limited polling that suggests he could draw more support from GOP-leaning voters.
