JOB FAIR for migrants held in Chicago despite the city's high unemployment rate for Black residents
A job fair for migrants was held in Chicago despite the city's high unemployment rate for Black residents.
The Nov. 2 job fair
was held at the Misericordia Home, located on the city's north side. Almost 500 migrants from Venezuela, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Ukraine attended the event that sought to fill up more than 400 vacancies.
With the assistance of interpreters, the migrants met with representatives in fields including health care, manufacturing, hospitality, logistics and others. The companies also offered help securing government services, legal papers and even training and educational opportunities.
Afghan migrant Siam Pasarly was one of the organizers of the job fair. He told local Chicago TV station
WGN 9 that he hopes to help immigrants avoid the struggles he went through when he first came to the Windy City.
"It is very difficult, it is very tough," said Pasarly, the co-founder of KaarPoh Staffing Agency. "Until you experience it, you just don't know."
The job fair for migrants came five months after
Crain's Chicago Business expounded on Windy City's unemployment problem.
"The jobless rate rose from 43.7 percent to 57.4 percent between 2019 and 2021 for Black people [aged] 20 to 24 in Chicago,"
the paper wrote in June. "The unemployment rate increase for Black women aged 20 to 24 was staggering, rising from 32 percent in 2019 to 60 percent in 2021."
The issue also extended to the Prairie State at large. According to the June 2023 report, unemployment rates for Blacks were at 10.2 percent from January to April of that year. In contrast, unemployment rates for other ethnicities during the same period were markedly lower – at 4.6 percent for Hispanics and 3.2 percent for Whites.
Lack of jobs for Blacks angering Democrats' voter base
The lack of employment opportunities for Black residents compared to those for unlawful border crossers has been a point of contention in the Windy City. According to
Breitbart, "the influx of illegal aliens has many activists for Chicago's black community worried and angry."
In September, Fr. Michael Pfleger spoke out against expediting work permits for illegal aliens. The left-wing Catholic priest argued that doing so would put jobs for his Black flock at risk.
He asked: "What are we putting in place to make sure that there are no institutions in this city, this state and [this] country that will fire Black people because they have to pay them $15 or $16 an hour, and then hire a migrant and pay them $5 an hour? What are we putting in place?" (Related:

Even Chicago activist Zoey Lee shared this sentiment. During an appearance at a meeting of the Chicago City Council, she voiced a growing sentiment among Black Chicagoans over this issue. Lee accused city authorities under the leadership of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson of trying to start a "race war" between Blacks and Hispanics.
"To come here and continue to see more Hispanics … get jobs than Blacks here is a disrespect," she said. "It's a punch in the face."
