An illegal immigrant with a history of being deported has been charged with vehicular homicide following a tragic accident in Broomfield, Colorado. On Dec. 12, 37-year-old Jose Menjivar, originally from El Salvador, crashed his vehicle into another car, claiming the lives of Melissa Powell, 39, and her 16-year-old son, Riordan. He was immediately arrested by the Broomfield Police Department after being released from the hospital. Menjivar faces charges of vehicular homicide reckless, vehicular homicide DUI (driving under the influence) and being a habitual offender. The authorities speculate that alcohol and speed may have played a role in the accident. (Related: Group of young migrants attack German children and teens with sticks.) According to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson, Menjivar had reportedly entered the United States at an unknown time and place, with an immigration judge issuing a final removal order on April 14, 2009 and being deported in June of the same year. However, Menjivar managed to enter the country multiple times after that: in June 2012, November 2014 and finally in January 2015. ICE Denver lodged a detainer with Broomfield County on Dec. 18, 2023, indicating its intent to seek the arrest of Menjivar. The spokesperson emphasized that Menjivar had shown "no regard for immigration law" based on ICE records. "As part of its routine operations, ICE targets and arrests noncitizens who commit crimes and other individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws. All noncitizens in violation of U.S. immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention, and, if found removable by final order, removed from the United States, regardless of nationality," stated the ICE spokesperson. Furthermore, court records from Boulder County revealed that Menjivar has a history of prior convictions for drunk driving offenses spanning from 2007 to 2019. Boulder County is known to be a sanctuary jurisdiction, which adds another layer of complexity to the case given the ongoing debate over local authorities' cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Non-detained illegal immigrants in the U.S. exceed 6 million

A 2023 report from ICE has revealed a grim picture of the escalating border crisis, with the number of non-detained illegal immigrants within the United States exceeding six million. The data shows a 30 percent increase over the past few years, with the number of non-detained illegal immigrants rising from 4.7 million in 2022 to a worrisome 6.2 million in 2023. This surge is attributed primarily to the fear of individuals unlawfully crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The number of detained illegal immigrants also witnessed an increase, climbing from 26,299 in 2022 to 36,845 in 2023. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported a record-setting November with 242,418 encounters at the southern border, surpassing even the highest month under former President Donald Trump. Authorities deported over 142,000 illegal immigrants in 2023, nearly doubling the figure from the previous year. In other words, the rise in deportations only means that the number of illegal immigrants entering the country continues to grow. Former President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans, along with some Democrats, continue to hold President Joe Biden responsible for the ongoing border crisis. For instance, in a recent interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump predicted a drastic increase in illegal immigration. He said: "We have prisoners coming in. We have mental patients coming in by the thousands. Really, by the millions. Because you take a look, I believe that number will be 15 million people. Maybe more than that by the time Biden leaves office." Moreover, the former president has repeatedly labeled the influx of illegal immigrants as a national security crisis. A group of Republican senators backed this claim when they discovered improvised explosive devices and caught some illegal border-crossers carrying explosives designed for potential terror attacks during their visit to the border in October. As a response, Trump has pledged to implement stringent border security measures if successful in winning the 2024 presidential race.
