New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams has pledged continued support toward illegal immigrants despite the strain they cause on the city's finances. He expressed this support during his State of the City address on Jan. 24, reiterating that the Big Apple's resources will continue to be used for illegals. Adams emphasized that the federal government ought to play a role in helping unlawful border crossers adjust and assimilate. Throughout the hourlong State of the City speech at Hostos Community College in The Bronx, Adams called the situation a crisis. However, he stopped well short of calling for tougher enforcement of immigration laws – the actual solution to the Big Apple's woes. "The federal government must step up and step in. This is a national crisis that calls for a national solution," said Adams. "It is time for the federal government to deal with this federal crisis and make sure we give them the opportunity; let them work." He also endorsed the training and hiring of illegal aliens who have arrived in NYC en masse on buses from Texas, which was spearheaded by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Adams boasted: "We have helped more than 172,000 asylum seekers by providing food, asylum and medical care. We have helped tens of thousands file applications to extend, temporarily, their status and to seek employment." While the Big Apple cannot do it alone, Adams made it clear that he would like to incorporate illegal aliens into the municipal economy. He also reiterated that sending these illegals home to the countries they came from is the last thing on his agenda, regardless of what ordinary New Yorkers think.

Adams previously warned of illegals collapsing the city

The mayor's remarks at the State of the City address come amid a rising public outcry over the disruption of New Yorkers' daily lives. Two weeks before Adams delivered his speech, the city government decided to move 2,000 illegals from tents into the James Madison High School in Brooklyn. This prompted the school to shift to remote classes for the time being and sparked outrage among parents and others. At no point in his speech did Adams address this disruption. Reports of illegals relieving themselves publicly in the East Village's Tompkins Square Park have also provoked outrage among the Big Apple's residents. The illegal aliens have gathered in large numbers at the park as their asylum claims wend their way through the sluggish bureaucracy. According to the Epoch Times, the situation has even drawn international attention. Last summer, local media reported on the phenomenon of border crossers sleeping on the sidewalk outside a migrant intake center. The municipal bureaucracy had been overwhelmed by more than 500 daily arrivals at the time. In August 2022, an internal email from the NYC Human Resources Administration called attention to the scope of the escalating migrant crisis. The email, which was leaked to the Epoch Times, called for help in dealing with a "drastic influx of asylum seekers coming to our shelter intake sites" and asked employees to consider working overtime. Incidentally, Adams himself acknowledged last September that the migrant crisis will eventually destroy the city. He has also publicly complained about the Biden administration's failure to take effective action on the matter. But his support of illegals, as outlined in the State of the City address he delivered, only serves to contradict his stance. I don't see an ending to this," he said during opening remarks delivered at a town hall-style gathering in Manhattan. "This issue will destroy NYC."
