Meredith Poll: Donald Trump LEADS Joe Biden by five points in North Carolina

A new poll conducted by Meredith College has found that former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden by five points in North Carolina. The poll, conducted from Jan. 26 to 31 with 760 North Carolina voters, covered a range of topics, including primary preferences, policy issues, political polarization and the threat to democracy. Trump received 44 percent support from North Carolina voters, while Biden only got 39 percent backing in a head-to-head race. However, 12 percent of respondents say they would rather vote for someone else and the remaining four percent are still undecided. "Given our recent presidential election history in North Carolina, I still expect this to be a closely contested election between Trump and Biden. There are many questions about what might happen over the next nine months that will impact the outcome, including former President Trump’s legal status, whether any third-party candidates have any real traction with North Carolina voters, etc.," said Merideth Poll Director David McLennan. The survey has garnered attention as it followed a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey of seven swing states, which also showed Trump leading Biden 49 percent to 39 percent in North Carolina. The poll was conducted from Jan. 16 to 24 and surveyed 4,956 registered voters across Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In 2020, Trump lost all these states except North Carolina, making the swing state poll consistent with national polling trends that show Trump leading Biden by four points, 48 percent to 44 percent. The findings suggest a growing sentiment of nostalgia among voters for the Trump era, characterized by lower gas prices, affordable goods, secure borders and a perception of global peace.

Trump overwhelming favorite in North Carolina GOP primary

The Meredith Poll also highlights the dominance of Trump in the GOP primary in North Carolina. Among the 375 respondents planning to vote in the GOP presidential primary in the state, 72 percent support Trump while only 20 percent support former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. The poll suggests a lack of momentum for Haley, despite other Republican candidates dropping out of the race. In fact, a recent poll conducted by Fabrizio, Lee and Associates for the pro-Trump MAGA Inc. PAC shows that Haley can't beat Trump even in her home state of South Carolina. (Related: South Carolina poll: Trump leads Haley by 35 points in her own backyard.) According to the survey published by The Messenger, 66 percent of likely South Carolina Republican primary voters support Trump, while only 31 percent support Haley. The support for Trump is a combination of 59 percent of respondents who will "definitely" vote for him and six percent who "probably" will. In contrast, support for Haley comprises seven percent of those who "probably" will and 24 percent who "definitely" will.
"Trump's lead in North Carolina seems very consistent since the last administration of the Meredith Poll. Even with Republicans dropping out of the race, there seems to be no momentum for Nikki Haley in the state," said McLennan.
