The commander of the Iranian Navy has stated in a live broadcast that the regime in Tehran has officially claimed Antarctica as Iranian territory and is drawing up plans to station troops at the South Pole. Islamic Republic of Iran Navy Commodore Shahram Irani said that Iran possesses property rights at the South Pole in an announcement that outlined future plans to raise the Iranian flag at the southern continent and conduct both military and scientific activities there. This declaration comes following a period of saber-rattling by Iran and its navy, drawing attention from the international community particularly following the involvement of Iranian-backed militias in the killing of three American soldiers in Jordan the previous month. Following Irani's revelation, Fox News Digital sought insights from a State Department spokesperson regarding whether or not the $6 billion in unfrozen sanctioned Iranian funds that President Joe Biden is allowing Tehran to reclaim could be used to establish an Iranian military base in Antarctica. The spokesperson clarified that Iran's funds, currently held in Qatar, are restricted and may only be used to purchase humanitarian goods such as food, medicine, medical devices and agricultural products like fertilizer. The response was specially crafted to dispel any concerns about the potential misuse of unfrozen sanction funds for militaristic endeavors. Despite Iran's growing assertiveness globally, with recent developments such as the unfreezing of funds and increased tensions in the Middle East, there are doubts about the practicality and international recognition of Iran's claims in Antarctica. "Iran's future plans to try to expand its military presence and influence into the Antarctic would not only violate multilateral conventions on the issue, but continue the regime's trend of aggression across the globe," warned Israel-based author, journalist and military and intelligence analyst Yonah Jeremy Bob. "Whether through terrorism on basically every continent or its rampant piracy in the maritime arena, the Islamic Republic continues to show why it is a danger to world stability."

Ownership of Antarctic territory heavily disputed

Antarctica is not owned by any single country. Instead, it is governed by a unique international partnership formed under the Antarctic Treaty, signed on Dec. 1, 1959. This treaty designates Antarctica as a continent dedicated to peace and scientific endeavors. Over the years, 54 nations have acceded to the Antarctic Treaty, participating in this unprecedented example of global cooperation and diplomacy. The Antarctic Treaty emerged during a period of global turbulence and the Cold War. The signing nations, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. The primary objective of the Antarctic Treaty is to foster international scientific collaboration in Antarctica, resolve most territorial disputes and prohibit absolutely all military activities on the frozen continent to ensure its preservation for peace and scientific research. Under the Antarctic Treaty, nations are encouraged to engage in scientific research and international collaboration. A key aspect is the cultivation of trust and transparency, with nations urged to conduct inspections of any research station at any time without prior notice. Moreover, the treaty imposes a freeze on all territorial claims. While the treaty is in effect, no activities can strengthen existing claims, and no new claims can be made by any nation. Iran is not a signatory of the Antarctic Treaty. Read more stories like this at Chaos.news. Watch this video discussing Iran's declaration that it has rights to Antarctica.
