Woke University of Virginia spends $20 million on 235 DEI employees

The University of Virginia (UVA) reportedly spends an estimated $20 million on 235 employees – including 82 students – on its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) banner at the expense of taxpayers. Adam Andrzejewski, the founder and CEO of OpenTheBooks.com, expounded on this in a March 5 report on his Substack. A team of auditors for the watchdog reviewed the university's payroll file for 2023 to sort out the DEI position head counts, compensation and estimated cost of benefits. The team found that those in DEI leadership roles such as vice presidents, associate/assistant deans, directors, assistant directors and managers earned up to $312,000 last year, or $400,000 with benefits. Martin N. Davidson, senior associate dean of UVA's Darden School of Business and the university's global chief diversity officer, topped the list of 10 highest-paid DEI earners for 2023 at $452,000 ($587,340 including benefits.) In contrast, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin earned $175,000 for that year. Kevin G. McDonald, UVA's vice president for DEI and community partnerships, landed at No. 2 with a salary of $401,465 (roughly $520,000 with benefits.) When McDonald began his position in August 2019, he was earning a $340,000 salary that was eligible for a 10 percent bonus every year. According to UVA records obtained through the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, McDonald was given a $25,000 recruitment bonus and up to $30,000 for relocation costs in his first year. Andrzejewski also noted that some of the DEI chiefs have been transparent about their philosophies during their public comments, citing UVA assistant vice president for equity and inclusive excellence Rachel Spraker. The No. 7 highest-paid DEI earner for 2023 reportedly described the opioid epidemic in Appalachia as an example of "White toxicity." Spraker reportedly earned $186,800 ($242,840 with benefits) in 2023. Another example he cited was UVA assistant professor Lanice Avery, who made $102,200 ($132,860 with estimated benefits) in 2023. While Avery isn't included in the Top 10 high earners list, her credentials are worth mentioning. The assistant professor – who describes herself as a "board-certified sexologist" – runs UVA's Research on Intersectionality, Sexuality, and Empowerment (RISE) Laboratory. Andrzejewski wrote: "UVA was founded by Thomas Jefferson, the author of our Declaration of Independence. Jefferson's work presented the moral case for common freedom among all men." "The university has a historic opportunity to promote the time-tested principles: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident – that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' But instead of working toward the idea of the Shining City on the Hill under Jeffersonian principles, his university embraced the divisive quotas of the neo-Marxist DEI crowd."

University of Florida saves $5M annually by terminating DEI employees

The OpenTheBooks.com founder compared UVA to the University of Florida (UFL), which dismissed its DEI bureaucracy and saved both students and taxpayers $5 million annually. UFL terminated 13 full-time DEI positions and 15 administrative faculty appointments. The money saved from these terminations was reprogrammed into a "faculty recruitment fund" to attract better people who actually teach students. (Related: University of Florida LIED to Gov. DeSantis about money spent on DEI propaganda.) "Reform or abolition must await this summer’s anticipated changes in the school's Board of Visitors. At least until then, the very highly compensated, generally non-teaching, DEI staffers are safely embedded throughout the entire university – while costing students and taxpayers a fortune," Andrzejewski concluded. "Tens of millions of dollars in student tuition and taxpayer monies are flowing into promoting anti-American notions and radical philosophies that judge the color of one's skin instead of the content – and competence – of their character."
