A year after Iraq banned the words "homosexuality" and "gender" on media outlets, the Iraqi Parliament has successfully
passed a law criminalizing same-sex relations and transgenderism to preserve society.
Initially, the law, known as the Law on Combating Prostitution and Homosexuality, included provisions for the death penalty for same-sex acts. However,
opposition from the United States and European nations called for an amendment.
According to the law, individuals engaging in same-sex relations or transgender expression could face prison sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years for homosexual acts and between one and three years for changing one's biological gender or dressing femininely. It also bans any organization that promotes homosexuality or prostitution, imposing a
sentence of at least seven years and a fine of 10 million dinars (about $7,600).
The law garnered support from 170 out of 329 members of Parliament, primarily from highly conservative Shia Muslim parties, on April 27. (Related:
