Black athletic director in Baltimore high school allegedly framed White principal as racist using AI DEEPFAKE recording

A Maryland school athletic director was arrested after it was discovered that he had spread an artificial intelligence-generated impersonation of his boss, the principal of Pikesville High School, framing the man as racist. Dhazon Darien, 31, is looking at many charges due to the "deepfake" of Principal Eric Eiswert, including stalking, theft, disruption of school operations and retaliation against a witness. Back in January, Darien, who also serves as Pikesville High School's physical education teacher, intentionally shared the fabricated recording of Eiswert to a student, after which the recording went viral after it circulated on social media, causing widespread outrage and condemnation among members of the Baltimore County Public Schools community. Eiswert was temporarily suspended from his position as principal, and the school was bombarded with phone calls and social media comments and messages over the recording. Baltimore County Police Department investigators immediately opened an investigation into the deepfake, which included multiple offensive statements regarding Black students and teachers and Jewish parents. The recording was made in retaliation for Eiswert investigating him for allegations of theft and misusing school funds. "You know, I seriously don't understand why I have to constantly put up with these dumbasses here every day," the recording said. "Between these ungrateful black kids who can't test their way out of a paper bag or these teachers who don't get it, how hard is it to get these students to meet their grade level expectations?" It then went on to criticize faculty before saying "And if I have to get one more complaint from one more Jew in this community, I'm going to join the other side."

Police have conclusive evidence Darien fabricated the recording

Darien was arrested on the evening of Wednesday, April 22, while he was trying to board a plane at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Darien was stopped by airport officials because of how he had packaged his firearm for the flight, leading officers to learn that he had a warrant for his arrest. Baltimore police investigators say they have conclusive evidence that Darien was the one who made the recording. "We now have conclusive evidence that the recording was not authentic. The Baltimore County Police Department reached that determination after conducting an extensive investigation," said Police Chief Robert McCullough during a news conference. "Based off of those findings and further investigation, it's been determined the recording was generated through the use of AI technology." Darien was arrested and faces several charges including theft, stalking, disruption of school operations and retaliation against a witness, police said. Following a court appearance the day after his arrest, Darien was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond. This is a first-of-its-kind case, said Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger. He said that while the charge of disrupting school activities is only six months, it is important to "take a broader look at how this technology can be used and abused to harm other people." Meanwhile, the Baltimore County school system has officially recommended Darien's termination. Eiswert remains on leave, with Pikesville High School being run by district staff in his absence. The current plan is for the temporary administrators to continue managing the high school through the end of the school year, after which Eiswert may be allowed to return to his duties.
