X-RATED: Elon Musk's X now allows porn content
By lauraharris // 2024-06-06

Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, has introduced updated guidelines that permit not safe for work (NSFW) content on the platform, albeit with certain restrictions. According to the updated guidelines, users are now allowed to "share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it is appropriately labeled and not prominently displayed." The social media platform stated in the policy change that "sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression." "We believe that users should be able to create, distribute and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed," X said in a statement. "We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.” X defines "adult content" as any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior intended to cause sexual arousal. This includes AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai or anime. Examples provided in the policy include depictions of "full or partial nudity, including closeups of genitals, buttocks or breasts" and "explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts." (Related: Elon Musk: ‘Every conspiracy theory’ about Twitter ‘Turned Out To Be True.’) But despite the policy change, X still restricts the exposure of children and users who opt not to see adult content. The platform prohibits content that promotes exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization, harm to minors and obscene behaviors. Additionally, X does not allow adult content in highly visible places, such as profile photos or banners. In line with this, X encourages users who regularly post adult material to adjust their media settings, placing images and videos behind a content warning. This setting can be enabled under "Your posts" in the "Privacy and settings" menu. Furthermore, users can also add a one-time content warning to individual posts. Users under 18 or those without a birth date on their profile are restricted from viewing posts marked for adult content. Users can report unmarked adult content or other violations through the app’s reporting features and may appeal decisions if they believe there has been a mistake. "If you continue to fail marking your posts, we will adjust your account settings for you," X warns.

Allowing adult content on X leads to rise in scams

X had already allowed pornographic content even before Musk took over. However, when Musk decided to reduce its content moderation teams, X became a promotional haven for those working in the adult entertainment industry, such as creators on the platform OnlyFans. Following the reduction in moderation, X saw a surge in posts advertising OnlyFans pages and agencies. These agencies often employ call center agents to manage accounts, creating profiles that imitate real individuals to attract subscribers. X also experienced a significant uptick in adult content, particularly evident with the proliferation of porn spambots. All this, despite the open content policies of X. John Herrman of New York Magazine has brought attention to one of the more troubling aspects of this rise in explicit material. He highlights how porn spambots are exploiting the phrase "p*ssy in bio" to lure users into scams masked as links to local singles. Advertisers became hesitant and were further dissuaded by the unchecked explicit material and users uncomfortable with the excessive exposure to pornographic content might consider leaving the platform. In response to the backlash and to provide a safer user experience, X updated its policy and is now testing a new feature that creates communities dedicated to "adult content" or NSFW material. This feature aims to help users who do not wish to encounter such material by enabling them to label their communities as containing "sensitive adult content." But the updated policy does not directly address the "pornbot" problem of the social media problem Visit BigTech.news for more stories about X, formerly known as Twitter.
