The entire state of Massachusetts had been hit by an outage of 911 services on Tuesday, June 18. Journalist Nick Sortor posted about the development on X. "The 911 system is down statewide in Massachusetts, and there is no [estimated time of arrival] on it returning. This comes just weeks after 15 other states suffered similar outages. Why does this keep happening?" he wrote. He added that first responders in Boston "are literally recommending people go find a police officer or [a] 'fire box' to pull if there's an emergency. Both the Boston Police Department (Boston PD) and Boston Fire Department (Boston FD) posted similar messages on the X platform. The Boston PD wrote: "911 is currently down statewide. If you experience an emergency please pull a fire box. If you need assistance, please reach out to your local Boston Police District Station." In a separate post, the Boston FD also notified residents of the Puritan City that they can also get emergency assistance at their nearest firehouse. "Currently, the statewide 911 system is down. Calls are not going through," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. She added that residents shouldn't worry about calling the correct number or facility for their emergency, but to just reach out to their nearest authorities. "We've been in touch with the state and the relevant officials to work on getting this resolved. If you are experiencing an emergency, if you find your way to police, fire or [emergency medical services], we will make sure that you get to the right place." The State 911 Department, which is under the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) also acknowledged the issue, sending out an alert to mobile phones. The notification read: "911 services are currently down statewide. Delays in public safety response may occur. Call the local public safety business line directly if you or others are having an emergency. More information will be provided when available." Bay State's 911 outage also caused confusion in neighboring areas

The disruption of 911 services in the Bay State caused confusion in other states in the northeast, as some residents in those areas also received the notifications on their phones. But authorities in five states – Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York and Vermont all said their systems were operational. "We are aware that some individuals in Vermont have received wireless notifications about the Massachusetts event, said Barbara Neal, executive director of the Vermont Enhanced 911 board. "The official reason for that is unknown – but it may be related to individuals having signed up for an alerting system in Massachusetts, or having been at or near the Massachusetts border when the wireless alert was issued." The Associated Press (AP) later reported that the 911 system in the Bay state was restored. The Massachusetts State Police (MSP) announced the resumption of emergency services following the system's restoration, which meant that people could resume calling 911. However, the MSP did not provide any details behind the cause of the outage. EOPSS Communications Director Elaine Driscoll said it was unclear how many communities were affected by the outage. According to the AP, it was first reported by several law enforcement agencies at around 1 p.m. on June 18. Services were subsequently restored, with the MSP confirming that emergency services are operational once more at around 3:45 p.m. of the same day. Head over to Glitch.news for more similar stories.
