Biden will not withdraw from presidential race despite calls for a replacement candidate from the Democratic Party

Joe Biden will not withdraw from the 2024 presidential race despite calls from within his party for a replacement candidate after he was largely panned in his debate with Donald Trump. According to reports, the Democratic Party panicked when the 81-year-old Biden grappled with a hoarse voice and stumbled over words and moments during the presidential debate on June 27. Democrats were alarmed that Biden even struggled to maintain coherence against Trump. (Related: Biden’s cognitive decline is now painfully obvious to the world, yet Dems continue to deny it.)

"Democrats just committed collective suicide," said a party strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns. "Biden sounds hoarse, looks tired and is babbling. He is reaffirming everything voters already perceive. President Biden can’t win. This debate is a nail in the political coffin."

"It's hard to argue that we shouldn't nominate someone else," a Democratic consultant who works on down-ballot races said.

"He's a good man, he loves his country, he's doing the best that he can," said Van Jones, a one-time adviser to then-President Barack Obama and a strong supporter of Biden. "But he had a chance tonight to restore confidence of the country and of the base, and he failed to do that. And I think there are a lot of people who are going to want to see him take a different course now."

"No one expected this nosedive," one senior Democratic adviser told the outlet. Biden "was bad on message, bad on substance, bad on counter-punching, bad on presentation, bad on non-verbals. There was no bright spot in this debate for him." All this backlash resulted in the discussion of potential alternatives for the Nov. 5 ballot. Major Democratic donors have also voiced their concerns. One donor even labeled Biden's debate performance as "the worst in history" and suggested he withdraw from the race. But Biden's campaign spokesperson, Seth Schuster, announced that Biden is "not dropping out" of the election. Another campaign member echoed a similar statement, claiming that Biden will stay in the race because he is "the only person who has ever beaten Donald Trump. He will do it again."

Biden's campaign remains in denial about his cognitive decline

Biden's campaign remains in denial about his poor debate performance. Some members of his campaign blamed his faltering display to over-preparedness.

"He was over-prepared and relying on minutiae when all that mattered was vigor and energy," a Biden adviser said. "They prepared him for the wrong debate. He was over-prepared when what he needed was rest. It's confounding."

A Biden aide also told media outlets that the hoarseness of his voice was due to a cold, which a doctor who examined him before the event confirmed. But his campaign team cannot hide the obvious during the debate: Biden can't serve another term due to the extent of his cognitive decline.
