Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett has asked thousands of voters to provide proof of citizenship ahead of the November elections, a move that infuriated the Democrats in the Volunteer State. According to InfoWars, Hargett's office confirmed that the Tennessee Elections Division sent out more than 14,000 letters questioning the citizenship status of certain individuals in June. It offers bona fide U.S. citizens a prepaid mailing option to submit proof of their citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate. "Our office has received information that appears to indicate your voter information matches with an individual that may or may not have been a U.S. citizen at the time of obtaining a Tennessee driver's license or ID card," the letter stated. It also stressed that illegal voting is a felony punishable by two years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. "Accurate voter rolls are a vital component to ensuring election integrity, and Tennessee law makes it clear that only eligible voters are allowed to participate in Tennessee elections," said a statement issued on behalf of Tennessee Elections Coordinator Mark Goins and the Secretary of State's Communications Director Doug Kufner. It continued: "[Even though] the person could have been naturalized since applying for a driver's license, [they] likely did not update their records with the Department of Homeland Security." But Hargett's actions of ensuring election integrity ahead of the November elections did not sit well with Democrats, who accused Hargett of attempting to intimidate voters. Democrats in the Tennessee House of Representatives called for an investigation into the secretary of state for his actions. "On its face, this letter is an egregious and unlawful act by a state official targeting a certain population of citizens who are lawful voters, with the clear intent to intimidate them," Democratic State Rep. John Ray Clemmons said in a statement.

Democratic State Rep. Jason Powell meanwhile remarked that the letters dated June 13 burden voters with "re-proving their own eligibility" while being "threatened with imprisonment in a scare tactic reminiscent of Jim Crow laws." According to him, Goins – who oversees elections in the Volunteer State – "needs to cease with these threatening letters immediately and refrain from purging anyone who is eligible to vote from the voter rolls."
But Hargett's GOP colleagues and other conservatives came to his aid. U.S. Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) praised the secretary of state and took swipes at Democrats' lack of initiative to secure the election. (Related: Outraged over vote fraud? "If an outstanding secretary of state's office like we have in Tennessee has identified and is taking action on 14,375 potential non-citizens who may have registered to vote, imagine what blue state officials aren't doing or won't do," Hagerty posted on X. Conservative radio host Steve Gill also agreed with Hargett, saying that mandating proof of citizenship is the way that it should be to ensure a fair election. "I don't think they should feel offended, particularly if there is a gap between which people come to the country and later become citizens," he remarked. InfoWars continued that the calls to investigate the Tennessee secretary of state come as government agencies in 49 states provide voter registration forms to illegals without requiring proof of citizenship. It added that at least 19 states and the District of Columbia also allow illegals to obtain driver's licenses. "These insecure and easily exploitable Democrat policies have led Republican [officials] like Hargett to take steps to ensure a fair election." Head over to Rigged.news for similar stories.
