George Clooney the latest influential figure to call on Biden to step aside and urge Democrats to choose a new nominee
Actor and influential Democratic supporter George Clooney has publicly called for the Democratic Party to
select a new nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
In his
op-ed article written for the
New York Times, Clooney, fresh from co-hosting a star-studded fundraiser for President Joe Biden, expressed his deep respect and admiration for the president but stressed that time has taken its toll. He compared Biden's performance at the recent fundraiser, where he appeared alongside Barack Obama and Jimmy Kimmel, to his debate performance against former President Donald Trump.
"I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he's won many of the battles he's faced. But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can," Clooney wrote. "It's devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe big F-ing deal Biden of 2010. He wasn't even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."
Clooney wrote that he was unpersuaded by Biden's explanations for his debate performance in his interview with
ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, so he urged the Democratic party to acknowledge the reality of the situation.
"Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw. We're all so terrified by the prospect of
a second Trump term that we've opted to ignore every warning sign. The George Stephanopoulos interview only reinforced what we saw the week before. As Democrats, we collectively hold our breath or turn down the volume whenever we see the president, who we respect, walk off Air Force One or walk back to a mic to answer an unscripted question," he wrote.
The actor also warned that the Democratic Party could lose both the House and the Senate if Biden remains the nominee. So, he called on top Democrats, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to ask Biden to voluntarily step aside.
Although he refrained from endorsing any specific candidate to replace Biden, he encouraged other Democratic candidates to come forward and present their visions for the country.
He called on leading potential replacements – Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker "and others" – to come together without attacking each other, "go into the Democratic convention next month and figure it out."
Clooney, one of
the most influential celebrity supporters of the Democratic Party, helped the Biden campaign raise over $30 million at the fundraiser, with small-dollar donations flooding in from supporters eager to meet him and fellow actor Julia Roberts. But now that his op-ed has been published, contributions may slow down and make other celebrities more reluctant to campaign for Biden's reelection bid.
Hollywood elites and high-profile personalities want a new Democratic nominee
The Biden campaign has not yet issued an official response regarding the op-ed article, but a source has been gaslighting the public again about the real situation. The source claimed that "the president stayed for over three hours, while Clooney took a photo quickly and left."
However, this is not just about Clooney.
The actor's call followed similar appeals from prominent figures like actor Rob Reiner and author Stephen King earlier this July, who despite their prior vocal support, have expressed similar concerns. Even
high-profile personalities have also joined the chorus. (Related:
