World War III is closer than ever after government officials at the recent North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit in Washington, D.C., revealed their next-step plans to throw more money, weapons and soldiers at trying to defeat Russia.
Of note were statements made by Gen. Wieslaw Kukula, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, about how his country is preparing its soldiers for a full-scale conflict in the coming days.
"Today, we need to prepare our forces for full-scale conflict, not asymmetric-type conflict," Kukula told a press conference. "This forces us to find a good balance between the border mission and maintaining the intensity of training in the army."
Kukula's "border mission" comment was a reference to ongoing tensions with neighbor and Russian ally Belarus. Belarus is part of the "Union State" with Russia, and Poland recently launched a $2.5 billion initiative called the "East Shield" program that aims to better protect Poland's border with Belarus.
In 2021 during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) "pandemic," the European Union accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of intentionally flooding Poland's border with Middle Eastern migrants as a form of hybrid warfare. China also recently began conducting military exercises in Brest, Belarus, a city located just miles from the Polish border.
"Speaking at the same event, deputy defense minister Pawel Bejda said that as of August, the number of troops guarding Poland's eastern border would be increased to 8,000 from the current 6,000, with an additional rearguard of 9,000 able to step up within 48 hours' notice," reports state about how Poland is beefing up patrol on its border with Belarus.

Poland doubling down on "muscular, hawkish posture toward Russia"
Right now, Poland has about 190,000 personnel within its military. Over the next several years, the goal is to increase that number to 300,000 as NATO's "eastern flank" increasingly hitches its wagon to Ukraine's fate.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week to sign what the media is describing as an "unprecedented" military agreement. This treaty allows Poland to intercept Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory whenever such weapons threaten Poland and its population.
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, Poland has maintained what one media outlet described as "muscular, hawkish posture toward Russia" that has repeatedly involved Poland rejecting all attempts at a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
Just this past week, Polish President Andrzej Duda reiterated statements previously made about how Ukraine must not cede any territory to Russia as a condition of peace.
"If there is anyone who wants to give to Russia a piece of Ukrainian land and they are not Ukrainian, then let them give a piece of their land to Russia because it is easy to give away a piece of somebody else’s land," Duda said.
"I would like this war to end as soon as possible. However, it cannot end, it must not end in the victory of Russia because if it happened that way, we will have another war soon because Russia will attack again."
President Joe Biden also talked a big game at the NATO summit in declaring that Ukraine will somehow prevail against Russia in the end, even though all available evidence right now points to Russia winning the war.
"Ukraine can and will stop Putin," Biden declared from his script.
