Trump names J.D. Vance as running mate for 2024 presidential race
Former President Donald Trump
has officially named U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.
Vance, 39, initially started as a Trump critic before the 2016 presidential campaign. He eventually became one of his most ardent supporters today, which paid off when he narrowly defeated former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) in 2022. If elected, Vance would be the second Catholic vice president in U.S. history after President Joe Biden – a two-term vice president during the Obama administration.
"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of vice president of the U.S. is Sen. J.D. Vance of the great state of Ohio," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"As vice president, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our troops and will do everything he can to help me make America great again (MAGA). Congratulations to Sen. J.D. Vance, his wife, Usha … and their three beautiful children."
Vance's unwavering defense of the former president has solidified his standing within the Republican Party's populist wing. However, his commitment to conservative values and positions on controversial topics have been points of contention. (Related:

The Ohio senator was known for his critical stance on the Biden administration. He criticized the continued influx of U.S. weapons and financial aid due to Ukraine's unsustainable manpower and matériel needs. He also took a hardline stance against the Biden administration's immigration policies while advocating for the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
In contrast, Vance backed tighter controls on taxpayer funding for U.S. universities due to ideological biases and financial inefficiencies. He also aligned his position on abortion with Trump's view that it should be left to the states and supports access to mifepristone for first-trimester abortions. His opposition to a Congressional ban on bump stocks—a firearm modification—further underscores his commitment to conservative values, despite controversy from media outlets.
Biden-Harris campaign negatively reacts to Vance's appointment
The announcement sparked a
heated response from the Biden-Harris campaign.
"Here’s the deal about J.D. Vance. He talks a big game about working people. But now, he and Trump want to raise taxes on middle-class families while pushing more tax cuts for the rich," Biden posted on X.
Jen O'Malley Dillon, the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign chairwoman, echoed Biden's sentiment and accused Vance of enabling Trump's extreme agenda.
"Vance will do what [former Vice President] Mike Pence wouldn't on Jan. 6: Bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda, even if it means breaking the law and no matter the harm to the American people," O'Malley Dillon said.
"Over the next three and a half months, we will spend every single day making the case between the two starkly contrasting visions Americans will choose between at the ballot box this November: The Biden-Harris ticket who’s focused on uniting the country, creating opportunity for everyone, and lowering costs; or Trump-Vance – whose harmful agenda will take away Americans’ rights, hurt the middle class and make life more expensive – all while benefiting the ultra-rich and greedy corporations," he added.
