Not long after committing to defeat her disease with God's health, Lee passed away suddenly at the age of 74. A career politician with a lengthy 30-plus-year tenure in Texas politics, Lee was described by her family members as "a fierce champion of the people" who was "affectionately and simply known as 'congresswoman' by her constituents." Lee maintained a "near-ubiquitous presence" in her district and proudly reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. Her "humanitarian" policies spanned beyond local, national, and even international boundaries, according to her family, which says she placed "a special emphasis on women and children" while apparently neglecting the needs of her male constituents.
