Tennessee Rep. Burchett: Kamala Harris is a DEI VICE PRESIDENT

U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) has described Vice President Kamala Harris as one who got the position as a result of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The congressman for the Volunteer State issued this remark on X, in a post originally aimed at President Joe Biden. Burchett wrote: "The incompetency level is at an all-time high in Washington. The media propped up this president, lied to the American people for three years and then dumped him for our DEI vice president." He also referred to the former California attorney general as "a DEI hire" during a brief interview with CNN on July 22. According to Burchett, Biden said during his presidential campaign that "he was going to hire a Black female for vice president." He continued: "What about White females? What about any other group?" NBC News also recounted that in March 2020, Biden said at a Democratic debate that he'd choose a female running mate – but did not mention race or ethnicity. Other top contenders for his running mate then were U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, both White women. The congressman also pointed to Harris being a DEI pick during an interview with Newsmax. True enough, the vice president doesn't have any notable achievements outside her race – being the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. "When I hear her talk, I just scratch my head and think, 'This is what DEI is really about.' It clearly is," Burchett told the news outlet. "She checks all the boxes. She'll say she's of Indian descent one day, then she'll say she's of Black descent. It's just box-checking." Biden announced on July 21 that he was dropping his reelection bid, almost a month after his dismal performance at the June 27 presidential debate and mounting calls for him to withdraw. He subsequently endorsed Harris to take his place as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Burchett also blasted Secret Service director as another DEI hire

Burchett served as a longtime state legislator in Tennessee from 1995 until 2010. He was then voted in as Knox County mayor, until his election to Congress in 2018. Glenn Jacobs, known as the red-and-black-clad wrestler Kane in the World Wrestling Entertainment franchise, took over the mayoralty seat Burchett vacated in Knox County after winning the 2018 midterm elections. Burchett was one of eight House Republicans who successfully voted to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) last year. They later installed incumbent House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to the House's top position. Aside from the vice president, Burchett also branded Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle as a DEI hire during a July 22 hearing on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The July 13 attempt saw Thomas Matthew Crooks shoot the real estate mogul but only hit his ear. Crooks was later shot dead by Secret Service agents. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) asked Cheatle during the hearing whether the incident was "due to DEI or rather systemic failures in communication and potentially safety protocols." Cheatle, a 27-year veteran of the Secret Service, answered in the negative. "The incident on the 13th has nothing to do with DEI," Cheatle responded. "The incident on the 13th has to do with a failure or a gap either in planning or communication." But this did not sit well with the Tennessee congressman, who quickly chastised the Secret Service director. "You are a DEI horror story," he told Cheatle. Criticism of Cheatle revolved around her being unqualified for the job, and the fact that female agents assigned to Trump's security detail were physically incapable of protecting him. Making things worse is the fact that Cheatle got the job not because of her ability, but because of her connections. She reportedly fostered a relationship with the Biden family, leading to the office of First Lady Jill Biden recommending her for the position.
