Even a respected institution like the Catholic Church is mired in controversy. The Church has long been involved in
financial and sex scandals.
Stephen Brady from the Roman Catholic Faithful talked about the appalling extent of financial and sexual corruption in the Church during his appearance on "The John-Henry Westen Show." According to Brady, he first encountered corruption in the Church when his children were exposed to pornographic sexual education material in public schools in the mid-1990s.
Because he knew that Catholic teachers and school board members who distributed Communion at the local parish were involved in the issue, Brady tried to talk to his priest and bishop. But his efforts were in vain even after presenting documentation of the pornographic materials from the sex-ed program.
Next, Brady wrote to other priests in the diocese. He then discovered that his bishop, the late Daniel Leo Ryan, was "involved with picking up teenage boys off the street and having his way with them." Brady believed he could bring up the issues to the rest of the hierarchy, but he soon found out that the hierarchy was also part of the problem. (Related:

When Westen asked if the American hierarchy has made any changes for the better in light of sexual abuse in the Church, Brady answered that things haven't improved.
Even if other people claimed that bishops are unable to go "too far" due to fear of persecution, Brady added that they have an "obligation to do what is right before God." Brady also said members of the hierarchy that he talked to did not clarify anything, even to correct him if he was wrong.
Brady also criticized the hierarchy, which doesn't seem interested in correcting
the problems within the Church. While talking about the existence of canceled priests, he explained that "canon law means nothing" because none have had due process.
The Church is also rife with corruption issues
Brady also mentioned that there are instances of money laundering aside from sexual corruption in the Church, and that the public can only see "the tip of the iceberg."
When talking about the details of a case about Benjamin Seryani, a Jordanian that he knows, Brady explained that the former did not realize he was involved in alleged money laundering for corrupt Church officials until he started issuing bills for work that was never being done.
Westen and Brady also discussed the latter's motivation for addressing corruption within the Church. Brady noted that if more members of the hierarchy spoke up against corruption from its highest part, it would "force" the Church hierarchy to address the matter.
In 2021, the Vatican began its historic prosecution of Cardinal Angelo Becciu.
Becciu and other defendants were accused of extortion, fraud, money laundering and the misuse of Vatican funds, including funds donated by American Catholics to the Peter’s Pence collection. Before the trial, Becciu had been one of the highest-ranking officials at the Vatican.
On Dec. 16, 2023, a Vatican court ruled that Becciu had engaged in embezzlement by using 200 million euros ($217 million) in Church funds to make speculative investments that "violated the provisions on the administration of ecclesiastical property."
After his trial, Becciu was sentenced to more than five years in prison.
However, even though Becciu's conviction confirmed that some members of the Vatican were guilty of financial corruption, it also revealed how the Church in the United States has allowed that corruption. For years, the U.S. Church has provided the Vatican with millions of dollars in donations.
However, the U.S. Church also did not impose restrictions on the Vatican's use of those donations, which allowed financial abuses to continue.
Because of Becciu's conviction, there is now an opportunity for the U.S. Church to ask the Vatican to enforce strict financial safeguards to help
prevent another financial scandal.
