Harris-Walz tandem's first order of business: Ban AR-15s

Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz held their first joint rally in Philadelphia on Aug. 6. During the rally, they announced that they would be pushing for a ban on the semi-automatic AR-15 rifles and other firearms, which Democrats refer to as "assault weapons." Harris, who claimed that she found exactly what she was looking for in a running mate with Walz, described his running mate as a gun owner who believes "we need reasonable gun safety laws in America." Breitbart News earlier reported that Walz wanted the three central gun control laws that Harris and President Joe Biden have spent years pushing in Washington, D.C. They are also the three gun control laws Harris outlined during the Philly rally: universal background checks, red flag laws and a ban on AR-15s and other firearms that they label as "assault weapons." Harris said: "I am officially the [Democratic] nominee for President of the United States" as Walz stood behind her clapping as she made her comments. Walz thanked Harris for trusting him on this presidential campaign and talked about his experience working as a public school teacher, serving in Congress and supposedly serving in the Minnesota Army National Guard. Meanwhile, as per the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), there have been over 28 million modern sporting rifles (MSRs) in circulation since 1990. Its production increased 32 percent from 2020 to 2021. This increased the estimated amount of MSR produced (since 1990) by 15 percent from 24.4 million to 28.1 million. In 2021 alone, 21,037,810 total firearms had been made available for the U.S. market, including more than four million rifles. From 1990 to 2021, 255 million firearms had been made available to the U.S. market. "This report demonstrates the strength and durability of the U.S. firearm manufacturing sector and the U.S. firearm sales markets," said NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi. "The data continues to show that the modern sporting rifle is the most popular centerfire rifle sold in America today with over 28.1 million in circulation and being used for lawful purposes every day. The continued popularity of handguns demonstrates a strong interest by Americans to protect themselves and their homes and to participate in the recreational shooting sports."

Biden calls for ban on assault weapons, citing Trump’s assassination attempt

The incumbent president also called for the ban on assault weapons. Biden said the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was proof that this type of firearm needs to be outlawed in the United States. "It was used in the shooting of Donald Trump, just as assault weapons are used to kill so many others, including children. It's time to outlaw them. I did it once and I will do it again," he said. Trump's ear was grazed by a bullet after a gunman shot at him from a nearby rooftop during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, commonly known as the assault weapons ban, was originally enacted in 1994 but expired in 2004. Efforts to renew the ban have repeatedly stalled in Congress. (Related: Judge rules New Jersey's AR-15 ban is unconstitutional, but upholds state ban on normal-capacity magazines.) Biden, who reportedly made over 70 appeals to Congress to renew the assault weapons ban which primarily targets AR-15, also called for a reduction in political hostility and a rejection of all forms of violence. "If we are gonna speak about violence, we are gonna speak about guns. More children in America died of gunshot wounds than any other reason. That is sick," Biden said. "And it’s sheer cowardice if we do nothing about it. So, if you wanna stand against violence in America, then join me in getting these weapons of war off the streets of America."
