Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has voiced out that he won't back Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee. He made this declaration in an Aug. 15 post on the X platform. According to Breitbart News, this followed failed talks between RFK Jr. and Harris regarding an exchange deal. Under this deal, the independent candidate would endorse the incumbent vice president's bid and receive a position in her cabinet if she wins. The Washington Post initially reported RFK Jr.'s request for a meeting with the Harris campaign, citing officials within the independent candidate's campaign team. The New York Times (NYT) later reported that the talks ended in failure. "We've reached out repeatedly through the highest level intermediaries. We've been told that they have no interest in talking to me," RFK Jr. wrote in an Aug. 14 text, as reported by NYT. The following day, he took to X to condemn the former U.S. senator for California-turned-vice president. RFK Jr. lauded the late former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy Sr. and the late President John F. Kennedy – his father and uncle – for "their skills at debate and their ability to articulate a coherent vision for our country." "Harris is scared to debate and can't survive an unscripted interview. Instead of outlining a vision, she relies on middle school tactics – memes, forged headlines, infantile slogans … and name-calling. I've spent years battling government corruption and lies … [but she] spent years gaslighting Americans about the health of our commander-in-chief." RFK Jr. concluded: "I have no plans to endorse Kamala Harris for president. I do have a plan to defeat her." (Related: Why a Kamala Harris presidency would be the death of the Democrats.)

RFK Jr: Today's Democratic Party unrecognizable to his elders

In his Aug. 15 post, the independent presidential candidate also denounced the Democratic Party in its current iteration. According to him, the party "would be unrecognizable" to the late former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the late President John F. Kennedy – his father and uncle. RFK Jr. made several comparisons between the Democratic Party of his father and uncle and the one fielding Harris. While the version of yesteryear was "the party of civil liberties and free speech," the current part is one of "censorship, lockdowns, and medical coercion." Democrats during his elders' time were anti-war, but the party at present "is riddled with neocon warmongers." He continued that the Democrats of yesteryear championed "voting rights and fair elections," while the current iteration prioritizes "lawfare, disenfranchisement, and the coronation of its candidates by corporate donors and party elites." RFK Jr.'s remarks about the Democratic Party in his post echoed earlier sentiments he outlined in an open letter to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) last September. According to the letter, addressed to DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, "the Democratic Party has gone off track." "Throughout the modern era, the Democratic Party fought back against censorship, upheld civil liberties, resisted corporate influence and sought to enfranchise as many voters as possible. The Democratic party truly lived up to its name: The party of democracy, the party of the people," he wrote. "Unfortunately, in recent years our party leaders have succumbed to the siren of control. They have compromised the defining democratic principle of one person, one vote through repeated interference in the primary elections. They have hijacked the party machinery and, in recent years, directed the power of censorship onto their political opponents, raising political victory onto the altar in place of honest democracy." RFK Jr. concluded his open letter to the DNC by urging Harrison to "hold the engine of democracy … sacred" and "cede more power to the public, not less."
