50 U.S. Armed Forces veterans in Congress denounce Tim Walz for lying about his military service record

Fifty veterans of the United States Armed Forces who currently hold seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives have denounced Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, for lying to the American people about his military record. The lead signatories of the open letter are Veterans and Military Families for Trump Chairman Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) and Sens. Joni Ernst (R-IA), Roger Marshall (R-KS), Rick Scott (R-FL) and Roger Wicker (R-MS). The letter accuses Walz of repeatedly and falsely claiming to be a "retired command sergeant major," despite not completing the requirements to be promoted to this rank, and condemned him for falsely claiming that he carried weapons "in war," despite never deploying to a combat zone. (Related: STOLEN VALOR: Tim Walz built entire political career around "being a retired command sergeant major" when he ISN'T.) "The Office of the Vice President is a position that requires the trust of the American people and a solemn commitment to duty on behalf of the United States of America. As veterans who have served our nation, we feel compelled to address your egregious misrepresentations and urge you to come clean to the American people,” the military veterans wrote. Moreover, the congressional veterans criticized him for retiring from the Minnesota Army National Guard right before his unit was given the order to prepare to be deployed to Iraq. They argue that this action demonstrated a clear lack of "dedication, bravery and an unwavering sense of duty." The veterans were also dismayed by the fact that Walz had "lied [his] way through a political career launched on the foundation of a title [he] did not earn and combat deployments [he] did not take part in." "In short, our grave concern stems from the fact that the Office of the Vice President is one heartbeat away from becoming the Commander-In-Chief. You've already demonstrated your unwillingness to lead in times of war and a lack of honor through your blatant misrepresentations exploiting and co-opting the experiences of America's combat veterans for personal gain," they continued. "As a result, America's veterans and servicemembers are rightfully concerned about what would happen to them should you ascend to the Presidency. When America asked you to lead your troops into War, you turned your back on your troops. You have violated the trust of our brothers and sisters in arms. Their blood, sweat, and sacrifice are the only reason our nation is able to exist. Until you admit you lied to them, there is no way you can be trusted to serve as Vice President."

Rep. Michael Waltz: Walz should be proud of his service and not have to lie about it

Walz has avoided discussing his military background with reporters and Harris campaign aides have successfully prevented him from being confronted about it or having to address it. Meanwhile, Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL), one of the signatories in the letter, said: "He should be proud of his service. Why do you have to lie about it? Why do you have to exaggerate?" "He was a sergeant major for a few months, but he didn’t do what you have to sign on the dotted line in terms of the schooling and the time and service to retire at that rank," continued Waltz, a retired member of the U.S. Army himself. "I retired as a colonel. I’m proud of that. I’m not pretending I retired as a general." The memo was issued in response to Democratic veterans supporting Walz, as the campaign tried to ease the controversy by emphasizing his support for veterans.
