A liberal politician in Switzerland with a migrant background is under fire for
using a Christian religious image for target practice.
Remix News reported that Sanija Ameti, a member of the Green Liberal Party of Switzerland's (GLP) Zurich chapter, was responsible for the sacrilegious action. The politician of Bosnian descent and co-president of the progressive movement Operation Libero reportedly shot at an image of the Mother Mary and the Child Jesus with a sport pistol. Ameti herself posted pictures of the deed on Instagram on Sept. 8.
"Switch off," the local councilor captioned her post. Three bullet holes marred the face of Mother Mary, while the face of the Child Jesus was riddled with bullet holes.
"Ameti is a Bosnian Muslim whose family came to Switzerland as refugees in 1995," the news outlet stated. "[She] is known for her provocations, regularly making headlines for her outrageous remarks and irritating the right-wing camp."
Ameti's stunt was met with fierce reactions, with Romanian nationalists and American Catholics spreading the screenshots of her post on social media. Several politicians in Switzerland also rebuked her for the sacrilege.
Jurg Grossen, president of the GLP's federal chapter, described Ameti's "deliberate provocation" as "unacceptable." He warned that the party is also seeking talks with her, warning: "We are not ruling out consequences."
Nicolas Rimoldi, president of the anti-medical tyranny Mass-Voll movement, also announced that
he would be filing a criminal complaint against Ameti. Rimoldi's complaint accused the politician of interfering with religious freedom, with those found guilty of publicly insulting or mocking the religious beliefs of others or "dishonors" objects of religious worship liable to fines. The Swiss People's Party (SPP) also confirmed on Sept. 9 that it had filed a complaint against her on the same day.
This was not the first time Ameti attracted criticism, according to
Remix News. In 2022, the politician commented during an appearance on the Swiss public broadcaster
SRF that two politicians from the SPP – Albert Rosti and Hans-Ueli Vogt – would not even be appealing to her if she were drunk.
Ameti issues public apology
It was only after the Swiss daily newspaper
Blick reported on Ameti's sacrilegious actions that she deleted the post. She then issued a public apology, claiming that she did not seek to deliberately provoke anyone.
"As a template for the 10-meter shooting, I needed motifs that were visible enough," said the Zurich councilor. She claimed to have an art catalog with her at the time, thus her use of the image of Mary and the Child Jesus. According to Ameti, she did not pay attention to the image's religious significance. "That was absolutely stupid of me. I didn't think anything of it. I'm incredibly sorry [and] I ask for forgiveness from the people who were hurt by this," Ameti wrote in her apology. She also resigned from the leadership of the GLP in Zurich following the fallout of her post.
But the GLP is not satisfied with her apology, according to an
SRF report.
"In the view of the party's leadership, Ameti's continued membership [in the GLP] would damage the reputation of the [party]. In order to prevent further damage, the party is requesting that expulsion proceedings be initiated immediately," the GLP announced.
