As a congressman, Tim Walz sponsored legislation that would have granted legal status to 3 million undocumented migrants

A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report has found that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, during his time in Congress, co-sponsored a bill that would have granted legal status to millions of undocumented migrants and would have placed significant financial strain on America's social programs if it was passed. The legislation, also known as the 2017 DREAM Act, proposed a pathway to citizenship for over three million illegal immigrants. The bill would have also expanded "chain migration," by allowing nearly legalized individuals to sponsor relatives for permanent residency. (Related: Tim Walz linked to radical personalities with close ties to socialists and Marxists.) The CBO report highlighted how both direct beneficiaries of the DREAM Act and their family members would have become eligible to receive support from federal social programs like Social Security and Medicaid after contributing payroll taxes after several years. Their inclusion in these programs would have significantly ballooned federal spending on them. The CBO estimated the DREAM Act would have added $1 billion on higher education, $5.5 billion on earned income and child tax credits, $5 billion to Medicaid costs, $2.3 billion in food stamp spending, $900 million on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, $600 million on Social Security spending and $300 million on Medicare. Moreover, the legislation would have increased direct spending by $26.8 billion, while generating just $900 million in net revenue. Programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would have been the key cost drivers. The CBO estimated that this would create a $25.9 billion budget deficit over the 2018-2027 period.

Walz accused of wanting to turn Minnesota into a sanctuary state

Aside from backing the 2017 DREAM Act, Walz also co-sponsored other immigration-related bills as representative for Minnesota's first congressional district from 2007 to 2019. In June 2018, Walz voted in favor of a bill that would keep families together after they had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. This bill included strict guidelines on when and how children could be separated from their parents. In 2017, he backed legislation that sought to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for undocumented migrants, including automatic extensions for those meeting specific criteria. Overall, Walz co-sponsored 27 immigration-related legislation during his term as representative that would have made America's migration crisis worse. This has sparked backlash and allegations of him wanting to turn Minnesota into a sanctuary state during the gubernatorial race in 2018. "This election is all about vision. One candidate sees a Minnesota where we all lose our health insurance, forced onto one government plan. Where we become a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants, and where we all pay even higher taxes. He wants us to be California," said a campaign ad released in October of that year. And in February this year, GOP congressional delegates from Minnesota wrote a letter to Walz about their concerns on Minnesota becoming a sanctuary state. "The 'Sanctuary City/State' experiment has proven to be an utter failure. These states and municipalities have become overrun with illegal immigrants and have used public schools, recreation centers, and parks to shelter these individuals. This experiment is also costly and dangerous; 'Sanctuary' status costs taxpayers billions of dollars. Minnesota is already one of the highest-taxed states in the nation. We advise you against increasing the economic stress of the citizenry by gifting their hard-earned tax dollars to illegal immigrants," the letter read.
