Upstate New York homeowner alarmed by immigrants illegally crossing the border through his back yard

A homeowner in Upstate New York has reported an increasing influx of illegal immigrants crossing from Canada into the United States through his backyard. Chris Oliver, who lives near the U.S.-Canada border, stated that his trail camera has captured illegal immigrants – including children – crossing through his property. His unpaved driveway, just feet away from the border, connects his home to a nearby cornfield that marks the boundary between the two countries. "This is unbelievable how many people have been coming across in this last year, year-and-a-half," Oliver said. He described how his motion-activated trail camera sends notifications to his phone, often alerting him to nighttime crossings. "We don't know who these people are. They're coming over here undocumented when you're at work and you see people walking by your camera, you don't know if these people are gonna do harm," Oliver said. He added that these illegal immigrants even left items behind while making the journey across the border through his property. Moreover, Oliver disclosed that recent criminal incidents, including a case where a Canadian man, linked to two murders, crossed the border illegally and was apprehended nearby in Akwesasne, has increased his fears. That's the biggest concern when you're not here is what is gonna happen," he said.

Illegal border crossings in the Swanton Sector have increased this fiscal year

In February, a resident of Highgate, Vermont, named Kristy Brow shared similar fears in an interview with "Fox & Friends" after capturing illegal immigrants on her security cameras crossing the border and leaving behind belongings and trash on her property. "It's scary to know that you don't know what's lurking around in your woods," Brow told host Griff Jenkins at that time. "We never know what we're going to find out back in our field. We found… clothes, as you see in the video. Water thermoses. You never know what you're going to find out there. My son has been out there, and, of course, Border Patrol was following footprints… You don't feel too safe." "It's definitely increasing, the amount of people coming over," Brow said. "We don't see it daily, but at least, every other week… you see some kind of sign that someone was out there. We did have video footage on our trail cam of three people coming across. The guy in the front… saw our flash go off, so he motioned to the other guys to stay still. Once, I guess he felt it was safe, then he motioned for them to continue, so they just continued on their way. Our neighbors, they've actually seen people on our property as well going to our field, so, yeah, it's just kind of unsettling. You don't know what anyone's intentions are." Brow and Oliver's properties are located in U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Swanton Sector, a northern border region that includes Vermont, New Hampshire and parts of Upstate New York. This sector in particular has seen a significant rise in illegal crossings. CBP data shows a dramatic rise in apprehensions along this stretch of the border, with 17,810 apprehensions in the current fiscal year, compared to just 365 in 2021.
