Center for Countering Digital Hate launches BLACK OPS campaign against RFK Jr.
The London-based Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has
launched a "black ops" campaign against former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Investigative journalists Paul Thacker and Matt Taibbi disclosed this development on the
Disinformation Chronicle, Thacker's blog and posts on the X platform. Thacker told the
Defender that he spoke with "several CCDH insiders" who provided minutes from internal staff meetings that took place between January and early October.
According to the documents, CCDH planned to organize a "black ops" campaign against RFK Jr. and also planned to pressure Substack to ban Dr. Joseph Mercola and former
New York Times journalist Alex Berenson from the platform. Both Mercola and Berenson are staunch critics of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines.
Included in the document is a remark by CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed himself, who confirmed that "black ops [are] being set up to look at [RFK Jr.]" due to "nervousness about the impact of him on the [2024 U.S.] presidential election." He continued: "We may be asked to comment, particularly from [an anti-vaccine] perspective." (Related:

This wasn't the first time the organization targeted RFK Jr. and Mercola. In 2021, CCDH included the two in its so-called "Disinformation Dozen" list published in March of that year. It listed down 12 of the "leading online anti-vaxxers" – which also included the late Dr. Rashid Buttar, osteopathic physician Dr. Sherri Tenpenny and Zelenko Freedom Foundation Co-Chair Kevin Jenkins.
Elon Musk, censorship also discussed in CCDH meetings
The leaked documents also showed that "killing" the X platform under Elon Musk was a top agenda item during those same meetings. One document even mentioned a "meeting with 16 congressional offices … to give updates on the Elon lawsuit." This pertained to a since-dismissed lawsuit filed by Musk against CCDH, which accused the organization of manipulating data to claim X hosts hate speech.
Meanwhile, minutes from a May 23 meeting referenced CCDH's possible contact with Thierry Breton, then-European commissioner for internal market and services. The French politician and former business executive singled out Musk during his time as a senior official in Brussels.
In August, Breton reiterated in a letter that Musk has a "legal obligation" to censor "harmful content" on X. In 2022, the official said the platform would have to "fly by our rules."
Thacker also noted that CCDH's founder is British political operative Morgan McSweeney, chief of staff to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and an advisor to the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris. CCDH also maintains ties to key Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) who has introduced multiple bills to regulate online "misinformation."
"The CCDH documents carry particular importance because McSweeney's Labor Together political operatives have been teaching election strategy to Harris and [Minnesota Gov.] Tim Walz, leading
POLITICO to call Labor and the Democrats 'sister parties,'" Thacker and Taibbi wrote.
The two journalists said CCDH may be running afoul of tax regulations through its lobbying activities in the United States. "According to the [
Internal Revenue Service], CCDH could lose its special tax status if 'a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation,'" they warned.
