U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) has joined the Republican-led House Caucus on Delivering Outstanding Government Efficiency (DOGE), the first Democrat to do so. The congressman for the Sunshine State announced his membership in the House DOGE Caucus on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Moskowitz cited a need for more efficient government operations as his reason for joining the caucus, which also has a counterpart in the Senate. "Streamlining government processes and reducing ineffective government spending should not be a partisan issue," he said in a statement explaining his decision to join the caucus. Moskowitz also emphasized that his proposals are rooted in practicality and not partisanship. "I've been clear that there are ways we can reorganize our government to make it work better for the American people," he continued. The DOGE Caucus was created in conjunction with President-elect Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, set to be led by entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. According to YourNews, the executive advisory panel to be led by Ramaswamy and Musk "aims to identify and address inefficiencies in federal operations." U.S. Reps. Pete Sessions (R-TX) and Aaron Bean (R-FL) lead the House DOGE Caucus, while U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) leads the Senate DOGE Caucus. According to The Hill, the House Oversight Committee will establish a similar government efficiency subcommittee next year. The House DOGE Subcommittee will be chaired by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). The outlet added that the formation of the DOGE caucuses in both chambers of Congress serves as recognition that the executive DOGE won't be able to slash spending and cut government programs without the legislative branch.

Moskowitz: Remove Secret Service and FEMA from DHS

YourNews stated that Moskowitz supports restructuring the federal government, explaining his decision to join the House DOGE Caucus. In particular, he advocates for removing the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from under the purview of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). According to Moskowitz, the DHS – which currently oversees 22 federal agencies – has grown too large to function efficiently. Thus, he has called for FEMA and the Secret Service to operate as independent agencies that report directly to the White House. (Related: FEMAGATE: A shocking display of weaponization of the U.S. government against conservatives.) "It's not practical to have 22 agencies under this one department," Moskowitz explained. "I look forward to working in a bipartisan manner with my colleagues to remove FEMA and [the] Secret Service from DHS." The congressman's recommendations are based on his experience with the two agencies. Moskowitz highlighted his familiarity with the Secret Service through his current role as a member of the House Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump. The bipartisan task force was established following the failed shooting of the president-elect in July. The congressman also cited his firsthand experience with FEMA's operations, given his stint as former director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management from 2019 to 2021. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, appointed him to the position. Moskowitz previously worked with U.S. Rep. Garrett Graves (R-LA) to advocate for FEMA's independence from DHS. "Moskowitz's alignment with the [House] DOGE Caucus signals a growing bipartisan interest in addressing federal inefficiency. His call for reorganizing DHS and separating FEMA and the Secret Service is likely to spark debate about the structure and scope of federal agencies," the news outlet concluded. "As Congress prepares for President-elect Trump's inauguration, the [House] DOGE Caucus is poised to play a central role in shaping government efficiency reforms. Moskowitz's participation may encourage further bipartisan efforts to streamline federal operations and address public concerns about bureaucratic overreach."
