An official at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has revealed that former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
did not want outgoing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee.
Lindy Li, a member of the DNC's financial committee, divulged this in an interview with
NewsNation Sunday, Dec. 1. She shared that
both Obama and Pelosi wanted to hold a primary election instead of crowning Harris to be the Democratic nominee.
The vice president replaced outgoing President Joe Biden as the party's presidential nominee in July after his dismal performance during his only debate with President-elect Donald Trump.
"I know they didn't. I have a lot of friends in Obama world and, actually, I'm friends with Speaker Pelosi. I spoke with her before … I actually went on air to encourage President Biden to step aside," Li said. She referenced her July 21 appearance on
Fox News – the same day Biden ended his campaign and dropped out – in this interview.
"It's not a matter of conjecture for me; it was necessary," Li continued. "It became clear that he was no longer effectively able to litigate the case against Trump. And Obama and Pelosi were both hoping for a primary instead of a coronation, so to speak."
According to Li, Pelosi did not have her eyes on one particular candidate when Biden withdrew. Meanwhile, Obama was "carefully vetting" Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) – but had "other names on his list."
"I'm not saying that Kamala Harris was necessarily at the top of the list, but he was definitely considering other candidates," said Li. "I don't think she was ruled out."
She told
NewsNation that many Democrats were hoping for a "lightning round" primary to happen, but this never came. According to her, Biden blocked a new Democratic primary when he endorsed Harris as his replacement. (Related:

"I don't think anyone saw that coming. We did not see that coming," said Li. "I think a lot of people anticipated he might have stepped aside, but no one anticipated the twofer that we got that day."
Li also slams the Harris campaign's spendthrift ways
Trump defeated Harris during last month's election in a landslide victory. He won both the Electoral College and the popular vote, securing a non-consecutive second term as the 47th president. But according to the
Daily Mail, Li has voiced her concern about the Democratic Party's future.
The DNC official blasted Harris for her devastating loss against Trump, and more so her
unchecked spending on the campaign trail. According to Li, Democratic donors were furious over some reports of mismanaged spending that turned political consultants into multi-millionaires. Worse, the campaign was buried in debt – which Trump offered to pay.
"It was just startling how there was no sense of responsibility," she lamented. "They essentially set $2 billion on fire in 100 days."
"There's a lot of conflict of interest here. And we need a careful accounting, and probably more granular than the [
Federal Election Commission] report would offer," Li continued. "Because if we don't do that, how are voters and donors ever going to trust the Democratic Party again?"
Li also slammed Harris last month, after her loss to Trump, for failing to strike the right tone in a call with donors. The DNC official was "stunned" by the lack of post-election reflection or acknowledgment of lessons learned. Instead, Harris and others in her failed presidential campaign spent more time "patting each other on the back."
"I believe at one moment in the call she was talking about her Thanksgiving recipe," said Li. "I think I was stunned to hear that, given just the extent and brutality of the loss."
