- New York City Mayor Eric Adams has reversed his stance on deporting migrants charged with crimes, stating that those who commit crimes in the city have "abdicated their right to be here."
- Adams now supports deporting criminal migrants, including those involved in serious offenses like shootings and rapes, and is willing to work with the incoming Trump administration and border czar Tom Homan to address the issue.
- He criticized the Democratic establishment for shifting away from historically supported deportations of criminal migrants, citing past statements by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama advocating for the removal of criminals.
- Adams highlighted the case of Bernardo Castro Mata, a Venezuelan national who allegedly shot two NYC police officers, as an example of why criminal migrants should not remain in the city.
- The mayor condemned "cancel culture," vowing to prioritize public safety and challenging critics to oppose his plans to protect New Yorkers from harm.
New York City (NYC) Mayor Eric Adams has expressed
his openness to deport migrants charged with crimes from the Big Apple, a complete 180 from his previous stance.
"My position is: people who commit crimes in our city, you have abdicated your right to be in our city and I am open to figure out the best way to address that," he said in what is a shift from his past position of waiting for convictions before
shipping off immigrant criminals.
"Those who are here committing crimes [and] robberies, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country, I want to sit down and hear the plan on how we're going to address them. Those are the people I am talking about, and I would love to sit down with the border czar to hear his thoughts on how we're going to address those who are harming our citizens."
Adams defied the Democratic political establishment
by vowing to work with the second Trump administration to deport these criminal migrants. To this end, Adams expressed excitement to sit down with border czar Tom Homan to figure out how to fix the crisis, which outgoing President Joe Biden started. (Related:

When a reporter asked Adams why working with Homan and President-elect Donald Trump to deport criminal migrants is a good idea, the mayor pointed out that top Democrats used to support deportations publicly – before the topic became verboten.
"I want you all to go back and Google Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Google what they said about those who commit crimes in our city and … in our country," he replied. "They said, 'Those who commit crimes need to get out right away.' That was their position. So, this is not a new position."
Adams challenges his critics: "Cancel me"
To hammer his point home, Adams referenced the case of 19-year-old Venezuelan national Bernardo Castro Mata. The Venezuelan illegally entered the U.S. before making it to NYC, where he allegedly shot two officers of the NYC Police Department – with the shooting being captured on video.
"You've got a guy, he's on camera shooting at a police officer," Adams pointed out. "I don't want that guy in my city, plain and simple."
"I want to make clear I'm not going to [war] with this administration. I'm going to be working with this administration. I'd like to speak with our border czar and find out what his plans are, where our common grounds are. We can work together."
Adams then condemned "the
era of cancel culture," noting that many progressives have been afraid to put their foot down on deporting criminal migrants due to fears of being denounced. He then issued a challenge to those critical of his plans to work with the border czar.
"Well, cancel me, because I'm going to protect the people of the city. If you come into this country, in this city, and think you’re going to harm innocent New Yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers, this is not the mayor you want to be in the city under."
