CIA now believes COVID-19 originated from Wuhan LAB LEAK

  • The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) now claims that SARS-CoV-2 likely originated from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, marking a departure from its previous agnostic stance.
  • CIA Director John Ratcliffe declassified the updated assessment and emphasized the lab leak theory, aligning with President Donald Trump's administration's push for accountability on the pandemic.
  • In 2023, a CIA whistleblower accused the agency of bribing six analysts to change their conclusion about the virus's origins from a lab leak to a natural transmission, leading to a House committee investigation.
  • The CIA's stance shift coincided with geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China, raising questions about potential influence on the agency's assessment.
  • Despite the CIA's new stance, the debate on the origins of COVID-19 remains contentious, with China denying the lab leak theory and other agencies and scientists maintaining the possibility of natural zoonotic transmission.
The origins of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) remain one of the most contentious and politically charged debates of the current period. Adding another layer to the ongoing debate, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has shifted its stance on the matter, now claiming that SARS-CoV-2 likely leaked from a laboratory. In a statement released on Saturday, Jan. 25, the CIA said it now assesses "with low confidence" that COVID-19 likely originated from a research-related incident, such as a lab leak, rather than a natural zoonotic transmission. Despite this, the agency emphasized that both scenarios remain plausible and that its assessment could change with new data. The statement marked a significant departure from the CIA's previous agnostic stance, which had long maintained that the virus' origins were unclear. It also coincided with President Donald Trump's second term and his administration's push to hold China accountable for the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the shift in stance happened just before Trump's inauguration. Newly confirmed CIA Director John Ratcliffe, a vocal proponent of the lab leak theory, declassified the assessment. "I think our intelligence, our science, and our common sense all really dictate that the origins of COVID-19 was a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV)," he told Breitbart News in a recent interview. The new CIA director, a staunch critic of China's handling of the pandemic, added that ensuring the public is aware of the agency's assessment was a "day-one thing" for him. The WIV, which which has long been at the center of the lab-leak theory, has faced scrutiny over its research into bat coronaviruses and alleged biosafety lapses. China has consistently denied the lab-leak theory, accusing the U.S. of attempting to "smear" Beijing with false allegations.

Whistleblower: CIA bribed analysts to alter COVID-19 origin findings

This change of shift contrasts with allegations put forward by a whistleblower from the CIA back in 2023. The highly credible whistleblower accused the agency of bribing six of its analysts to change their conclusion about the origins of SARS-CoV-2. According to testimony obtained by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, the CIA allegedly offered significant financial incentives to six of its analysts to change their conclusion about COVID-19's origins. The whistleblower, described as a highly credible senior-level CIA officer, revealed that a seven-member COVID Discover Team initially concluded that the virus likely originated from a lab in Wuhan, China. However, six of the analysts were reportedly bribed to alter their findings to support the natural origin theory. The House committee has since launched an investigation into these allegations, demanding documents and communications related to the CIA's COVID-19 origins review. In a letter to then-CIA Director William Burns, the committee wrote: "The whistleblower further contends that to come to the eventual public determination of uncertainty, the other six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position." The CIA denied the allegations, with a spokesperson stating, "We do not pay analysts to reach specific conclusions." However, they acknowledged that the agency is taking the allegations "extremely seriously" and is conducting an internal review. Previously, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Energy leaned toward the lab leak theory. Meanwhile, other agencies alongside some within the intelligence community have favored the natural origin hypothesis. Ultimately, the timing of the CIA's shift suggests that the agency's assessment may have been influenced by broader geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China.
