Trump signs orders banning transgender service members and eliminating DEI programs in the U.S. military
- President Donald Trump signed executive orders banning transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military and ending diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.
- The orders cite "gender radicalism" and "mental unfitness" as reasons for the ban on transgender service members and prohibit sharing bathrooms, bedrooms and changing areas between biological men and women.
- DEI programs are characterized as a "woke assault" that undermines leadership, merit, and unit cohesion, leading to a ban on race- and sex-based preferences within the Armed Forces.
- Trump vowed to reinstate military personnel discharged over vaccine refusal, promising full back pay and protection from "radical political theories."
- The president emphasized the military's singular focus on developing warrior ethos, military excellence and defeating America's enemies, without distractions from political agendas or ideologies.
President Donald Trump has signed executive orders that will
ban transgender service members and end diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in the U.S. military.
Among the orders, one directly
prohibits "gender radicalism" in the military, banning individuals who identify as a gender other than their birth sex from serving or enlisting. The new executive order goes further by prohibiting any service member who identifies as a gender other than their birth sex from serving or enlisting, citing mental unfitness as the rationale.
"The United States military has a clear mission to protect the American people and our homeland as the world's most lethal and effective fighting force," read the order. "Success in this existential mission requires a singular focus on developing the requisite warrior ethos and the pursuit of military excellence cannot be diluted to accommodate political agendas or other ideologies harmful to unit cohesion."
"
A man's assertion that he is a woman and his requirement that others honor this falsehood is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member." (Related:

The order also directs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ban biological men and women from sharing bathrooms, bedrooms and changing areas while in the military and to put an end to the use of "invented and identification-based pronoun usage."
Additionally, the president signed an order eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs from the military, which he described as a "woke assault" on the armed forces. The order bans "race- or sex-based preferences system" by any element of the Armed Forces, the
Department of Defense (DoD) or the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
"As Chief Executive and as Commander in Chief, I am committed to meritocracy and to the elimination of race-based and sex-based discrimination within the Armed Forces of the United States," read the executive order. "No individual or group within our Armed Forces should be preferred or disadvantaged on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, color or creed."
"Unfortunately, in recent years civilian and uniformed leadership alike have implemented DEI programs and their attendant race and sex preferences within the Armed Forces. These actions undermine leadership, merit, and unit cohesion, thereby eroding lethality and force readiness. They also violate Americans' consciences by engaging in invidious race and sex discrimination."
Trump vows to reinstate military personnel discharged over vaccine refusal
Aside from the two executive orders,
Trump also vowed to reinstate military personnel who were expelled for refusing to comply with the COVID-19 vaccine requirement and to shield service members from "radical political theories."
"This week, I will reinstate any service members who were unjustly expelled from our military for objecting to the COVID vaccine mandate with full back pay," Trump said during his inauguration day. "And I will sign an order to stop our warriors from being subjected to radical political theories and social experiments while on duty. It's going to end immediately."
Trump's promise to reinstate these former service members and to protect them from what he termed "radical political theories" resonated with the audience, drawing sustained applause.
"Our armed forces will be freed to focus on their sole mission: defeating America's enemies," Trump said.
