  • The U.S. voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia and calling for its withdrawal from Ukraine, despite European nations backing the resolution.
  • The U.S. introduced a separate resolution, "The Path to Peace," which did not label Russia as the aggressor or acknowledge Ukraine's territorial integrity.
  • The U.S. charge d'affaires referred to the conflict as an "escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war" and emphasized the failure of previous UN resolutions demanding Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine.
  • European countries were left stunned by the U.S. decision to oppose the resolution, as the U.S. and European partners have been working to end the conflict but with different approaches.
  • The U.S. representative called for an immediate end to the conflict, citing the potential catastrophic consequences of continued fighting and the suffering of Ukrainians and Russians.
The United States has voted against a United Nations (UN) resolution condemning Moscow and calling for a Russian withdrawal from war against Ukraine. The resolution, backed by Ukraine and European nations, faced pressure from the U.S., which sought to improve relations with Russia and end the ongoing conflict. The resolution faced opposition from several nations, including the U.S. and Russia, but ultimately passed with 93 votes in favor, 18 against and 65 abstentions. This shift in U.S. policy comes as the Trump administration has been engaged in discussions with Moscow to find a way to end the war. President Donald Trump has recently intensified his rhetoric toward Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while European partners are scrambling to adjust to this new dynamic. U.S. introduces a separate resolution that does not label Russia as the aggressor

Later in the day, the U.S. introduced a separate Security Council resolution titled "The Path to Peace." This resolution did not label Russia as the aggressor or acknowledge Ukraine's territorial integrity. However, European countries were able to add an amendment that inserted anti-Russian language. The U.S. abstained from voting after the amendment was added, and the resolution passed in a vote of 93-8 with 73 abstentions. Dorothy Shea, the U.S. charge d'affaires, referred to the conflict as an "escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war," a phrase that has not been commonly used by the U.S. in recent years. She also made a reference to the 2014 Ukrainian coup, which was backed by the United States and led to the ousting of former President Viktor Yanukovych, saying that the war in Ukraine had been ongoing for "11 years." In her address, Shea emphasized the failure of previous UN resolutions demanding Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine. "Since the start of the war 11 years ago, the United Nations has repeatedly condemned Russia’s blatant violations of the UN Charter. Multiple resolutions of the General Assembly have demanded that Russia withdraw its forces from Ukraine," she said. "Those resolutions have failed to stop the war. It has now dragged on for far too long, and at far too terrible a cost to the people in Ukraine, in Russia and beyond," Shea added. Shea went on to call for an immediate end to the conflict, warning of the potential catastrophic consequences of continued fighting. "Generations of Ukrainians and Russians have died unnecessarily as the war has brought the world closer to a nuclear confrontation. The longer it continues, the greater the suffering for both nations. This war must end now." Check out WWIII.news for more stories about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
