Rep. Jamie Raskin demands that 17 deported Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gang members be returned to the U.S. from El Salvador
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio deported 17 alleged Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gang members to El Salvador after their designation as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).
- Rep. Jamie Raskin condemned the deportations as unlawful, accusing Republicans of undermining judicial authority after a federal judge ordered deportation flights to be turned back.
- Leftists argue at least one deportee, a Maryland father, was innocent, but Republicans, including J.D. Vance, dismissed this, citing prior court rulings linking him to MS-13.
- Republicans insist on prioritizing the removal of dangerous criminals, with Vance criticizing Democrats and the media for sympathizing with alleged gang members over American citizens.
- The Trump administration maintains the deportees were gang members or leaders, emphasizing presidential authority to remove foreign terrorists, and dismissed claims of wrongful deportation as an "administrative error."
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has
demanded the return of 17 alleged Tren de Aragua and MS-13 gang members deported from Guantanamo Bay to an El Salvador mega prison.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio
deported the alleged gang members after Tren de Aragua and MS-13 were designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). "These criminals will no longer terrorize our communities and citizens," Rubio posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "In order to keep the American people safe, @POTUS designated the Tren de Aragua and MS-13 as Foreign Terrorist Organizations." (Related:

However, in a fiery House Judiciary Committee hearing on April 1, Raskin called the removal of illegal immigrants who committed crimes in the U.S. as unlawful. Raskin even accused the Republicans of undermining judicial authority after they criticized Federal District Court Judge James Boasberg, who recently ordered deportation flights to be turned back mid-air.
"I call on my colleagues right now to call off their campaign to impeach federal judges for doing their job," Raskin said, referring to Republicans who criticized Boasberg. "I call on them to demand that the Trump administration comply with all judicial orders while appealing whichever ones they want to appeal. And to demand the return of people unlawfully taken to El Salvador on that so-called plane full of gangbangers."
Moreover, leftists have pushed a narrative that at least one deportee, an alleged innocent father from Maryland, was wrongfully removed.
Vance dismisses leftists' claim
Vice President J.D. Vance swiftly dismissed the claim, citing prior immigration court rulings that linked the man to the brutal MS-13 gang. Vance also criticized the media and Democrats for prioritizing the interests of undocumented immigrants involved in criminal gang activity over those of American citizens.
"Joe Biden
sanctioned an invasion of the United States. We have approximately 20 million illegal aliens in this country," Vance said. "Their victims are measured in longer wait times for hospitals, overwhelmed schools and murder victims the media largely ignored. The media has determined the real victims are the gang members we're trying to get out of the country."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also rejected the "fake story," clarifying that any error in the case was purely administrative.
"The administration maintains the position that this individual was a member of the brutal and vicious MS-13 gang," Leavitt said. "Intelligence shows he wasn't just a member but a leader involved in human trafficking. Foreign terrorists do not have legal protections in the United States anymore and it is within the President's authority to deport these heinous individuals."
