"All The Things That Matter" on BrightU: Did America repeat Israel’s fatal mistake by rejecting GOD as KING?

  • In episode 5 of "All The Things That Matter," Brad Cummings warned that America, like ancient Israel, is rejecting divine governance for human leaders, leading to economic turmoil, cultural decay and loss of divine favor.
  • Citing 1 Samuel 8, Cummings compared Israel's demand for a king (who exploited them) to America's reliance on political saviors who erode freedoms.
  • America mirrors Israel's spiritual decline when God's presence departed (symbolized by "Ichabod"), as corruption and moral collapse lead to chaos.
  • Cummings cautioned against treating political figures as saviors, emphasizing that only repentance and a return to God can reverse judgment.
  • The solution lies in rejecting secular power and embracing divine governance, as seen in the Founders' vision — failure to heed this risks national desolation.
In episode 5 of "All The Things That Matter," which aired on July 9, author and theologian Brad Cummings issued a dire warning to America — one that echoes the ancient missteps of Israel when they demanded a human king instead of divine sovereignty. Drawing from biblical history, Cummings argued that the U.S. is now facing the same catastrophic consequences Israel endured: economic turmoil, cultural decay and a withdrawal of divine favor. Cummings, co-author of "The Shack" and editor of "The Founders' Bible," didn’t mince words: "When Israel rejected God as their king, they got Saul — a leader who enslaved them instead of liberating them. America is making the same mistake, trading divine governance for political saviors." The parallels are chilling. In 1 Samuel 8, Israel demanded a human ruler, despite God's warning that a king would exploit them — taking their sons for war, their daughters for service and a tenth of their wealth. "Sound familiar?" Cummings asked. "We're watching our freedoms erode under leaders who serve themselves, not God." Cummings pointed to a pivotal biblical tragedy — the loss of God's presence symbolized by the name Ichabod, meaning "the glory has departed." When Israel's priesthood became corrupt (1 Samuel 4), God allowed the Ark of the Covenant to be captured, leaving the nation spiritually desolate. "America is in an Ichabod moment," Cummings declared. "We've normalized corruption, abandoned biblical justice and now wonder why chaos reigns. The signs are everywhere — economic instability, moral collapse and a government that no longer serves the people." The discussion turned to modern politics, where Cummings warned against idolizing leaders as saviors. "In Jesus’ time, the crowds chose Barabbas — a revolutionary — over the true King. Today, we're desperate for a 'MAGA king' or any strongman to fix things. But no human leader can reverse divine judgment without repentance." He even revealed he wrote in "Jesus" on his ballot as an act of repentance: "The only solution is returning to God's governance. The Founders knew this — America was meant to be a 'heavenly kingdom,' not a secular empire." Cummings and Dr. Sherri Tenpenny agreed that America's crises — from financial struggles to cultural decay — mirror the "curses for disobedience" outlined in Deuteronomy 28. "We're experiencing the consequences of forsaking God," Tenpenny noted. "But just like Israel, repentance can restore us." History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Israel's rejection of divine rule led to exile. America now stands at the same crossroads. Cummings' message is clear: No leader can save America — only a return to God can.
