  • A senior Department of Justice (DOJ) official announced that nearly 20 subpoenas have been sent to doctors and clinics over alleged involvement in transgender medical procedures on minors, citing potential healthcare fraud and false statements.
  • The FTC hosted a workshop on July 9 titled "The Dangers of 'Gender-Affirming Care' for Minors" to investigate whether such care may involve deceptive practices that violate federal consumer protection laws.
  • The workshop aimed to assess whether families have been exposed to unsupported or misleading medical claims regarding the risks and benefits of gender alteration procedures for minors.
  • Detransitioners and grieving parents gave personal testimonies, describing rushed medical decisions and emotional harm, including one mother whose daughter died by suicide after her transition.
  • The event aligns with President Donald Trump's recent executive orders targeting restrictions on gender transition procedures for minors and addressing what the administration calls "radical ideology" in medicine.
A senior Department of Justice (DOJ) official announced that the department has issued nearly 20 subpoenas to medical providers and clinics involved in transgender medical procedures for minors. On Wednesday, July 9, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) organized a workshop titled "The Dangers of 'Gender-Affirming Care' for Minors" in Washington, D.C. As part of the workshop, the FTC is evaluating and potentially curbing practices within the transgender medicine industry that may violate the Federal Trade Commission Act, which prohibits deceptive or unfair practices affecting consumers. "This authority could be implicated if there is evidence that medical professionals or others omitted warnings about the risks or made false or unsupported claims about the benefits and effectiveness of gender-affirming care for minors," a description for the event read. "The workshop will help the FTC to understand whether consumers are being or have been exposed to false or unsupported claims about 'gender-affirming care' and to gauge the harms consumers may be experiencing." In line with the event, DOJ official Chad Mizelle disclosed the subpoenas are part of ongoing investigations involving allegations of healthcare fraud, false statements and other possible legal violations related to transgender medical interventions on children. Mizelle then urged individuals who believe they were misled or harmed by transgender medical providers to come forward and share their experiences. "If you are someone who has been harmed, please come forward and let us know," Mizelle said.

Grieving parents and detransitioners share harrowing testimonies about gender alteration procedures

The event aligns with President Donald Trump's recent executive orders focused on restricting gender transition procedures for minors and targeting what the administration refers to as "radical ideology" in medicine. The workshop was a fact-finding step to assess whether minors and their families have been exposed to unsupported medical claims or misleading marketing in the context of "gender-affirming care." During the event, the workshop featured an emotional panel of detransitioners and parents who shared deeply personal accounts of their experiences with gender transition attempts. Among the panelists were Prisha Mosley, Soren Aldaco, Beth Bourne, Forrest Smith, Helen Spiegel Lee and Gwen Turecki – individuals who either detransitioned or were family members of minors who underwent medical transitions. Several speakers described what they said were misleading or rushed medical decisions made during vulnerable periods in their lives or the lives of their children. Medical professionals, ethicists, whistleblowers and parents participated in the workshop, many expressing concerns that young patients are not fully informed of the risks associated with gender transition procedures, such as puberty blockers, hormone treatments and surgeries. (Related: Former FTM transgender teen supports Florida ban on using Medicaid funds for transgender medical interventions.)
