  • On July 24, a Ukrainian drone strike hit Sochi, a popular resort city on the Black Sea coast. The attack killed two women and injured 11 people, including a traffic police officer who was airlifted to a hospital.
  • The assault targeted the Adler district and an oil terminal in the Sirius district, causing multiple explosions across the city. Footage showed air defense systems engaging targets as civilians were rushed to safety.
  • The attack followed a round of peace negotiations in Istanbul, which aimed for a limited ceasefire to evacuate wounded soldiers and recover the dead, as well as a prisoner exchange. However, the talks ended without any significant progress, leading to retaliatory attacks from both sides.
  • In response to the failed negotiations, both Ukraine and Russia launched attacks on each other's territories. Russian forces targeted the Black Sea port of Odesa, killing one person and injuring at least four, while also damaging the historic Pryvoz market.
  • Despite the ongoing violence, negotiators discussed the possibility of further prisoner swaps. However, they remain divided on ceasefire terms and the prospect of a leaders' meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration with the lack of progress, highlighting Russia's continued attacks on civilian infrastructure.
In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, a Ukrainian drone attack struck the southern Russian city of Sochi overnight, leaving two women dead and at least 11 people injured, according to officials. The attack occurred Thursday, July 24, just hours after a round of peace talks in Istanbul. It has heightened tensions and raised concerns about the potential for further escalation amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The deadly strike took place in the Adler district of Sochi, a popular resort city on the Black Sea coast. Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of the Krasnodar Region, reported that debris from a downed drone fell on Aviatsionnaya Street, resulting in the immediate deaths of two women. In a post on Telegram, Kondratyev announced that both the women "died from their injuries at the scene." The attack also targeted a local oil terminal in the Sirius district. This bustling area includes parts of Sochi's former Olympic Park and is home to numerous luxury hotels, including those operated by Belgium's Radisson. Dmitry Plishkin, the head of the Sirius district, confirmed that one drone hit an oil facility on Tavricheskaya Street. Kondratyev added that "drone fragments also struck the oil terminal," exacerbating the damage. The assault triggered a series of explosions across different areas of the city, with local media and Telegram channels reporting more than a dozen blasts. Footage circulating online showed air defense systems engaging multiple targets, as students and hotel guests in the Sirius district were hurriedly moved to underground shelters and parking garages for safety. Among the 11 injured was a traffic police officer who was airlifted to a regional hospital. Four individuals, including the officer, were hospitalized due to the severity of their injuries.

Sochi attack follows a recent Russia-Ukraine peace talk

The Sochi attack came on the heels of a brief round of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul, which failed to yield any significant progress toward ending the nearly three-and-a-half-year war. The negotiations focused on a limited ceasefire to allow for the evacuation of wounded troops and the recovery of the dead, as well as a large-scale prisoner exchange. However, it ended without a breakthrough. In response to the failed talks, both Ukraine and Russia launched attacks on each other's territory. Russian forces targeted the Black Sea port of Odesa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, killing one person and injuring at least four. The attacks caused several fires and damaged the historic Pryvoz market, which Regional Gov. Oleh Kiper described as "the living heart of Odesa." In Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, two people were killed and at least 33 were wounded when Russian glide bombs struck a residential neighborhood. Another person was killed in a drone attack in the Sumy region, near the northern border, where Russian troops have recently established a foothold. In the central region of Cherkasy, Russian attacks injured seven people, including a nine-year-old, and damaged more than a dozen residential apartment buildings.

Prisoner swap and ongoing tensions

Despite the violence, negotiators from both sides discussed the possibility of further prisoner swaps during the Istanbul talks. However, they remain far apart on ceasefire terms and the prospect of a leaders' meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration with the lack of progress, writing on Telegram: "At a meeting in Istanbul, the Russian side was again presented with a proposal to immediately and completely cease fire. In response, Russian drones are striking residential buildings." Zelensky noted that Russia had launched 103 drones and four missiles during its overnight attack, which Deputy Prime Minister Oleskiy Kuleba said targeted civilian infrastructure, including seaports, transport hubs and residential areas. In recent weeks, Russian forces have intensified drone attacks on towns and cities far from the 1,000 km (620-mile) frontline across eastern and southern Ukraine. In response, Ukraine's military has been targeting energy and military sites in Russia, reflecting the escalating cycle of violence. (Related: Putin signals readiness for Ukraine peace talks, but Russia’s demands remain unchanged.)
