Famine officially declared in Gaza for the first time by UN-backed hunger monitor

  • The UN-backed IPC has officially declared a famine in Gaza for the first time, affecting Gaza City and surrounding areas, where 500,000 Palestinians face starvation and extreme deprivation after nearly two years of conflict.
  • Over 300,000 children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition amid a total Israeli blockade and severely limited aid access; the IPC warns the famine will spread to central and southern Gaza by late September, threatening over 640,000 people.
  • Over 1,400 Palestinians have reportedly been killed near Israeli-U.S.-backed GHF aid sites and at least 271 people, including 112 children, have died from starvation, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
  • Despite the IPC's findings, Israel rejects the famine designation, claiming food aid is entering the Strip in large quantities and accusing the IPC of relying on disinformation.
  • Calls for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access remain largely unanswered, with the IPC urging an immediate response to stop the spread of this entirely man-made famine.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has formally declared a famine in Gaza, marking the first time such a designation has been made for the embattled territory. The declaration, issued in a report on Aug. 22, applies specifically to Gaza City and surrounding towns, where approximately 500,000 Palestinians are now living in conditions of catastrophic food insecurity, defined by starvation, destitution and death. It paints a devastating picture of a humanitarian catastrophe that continues to deepen after nearly two years of war. "This report marks the fifth time the Famine Review Committee (FRC) has been called to review an analysis on the acute food security and nutrition situation in the Gaza Strip. Never before has the Committee had to return so many times to the same crisis, a stark reflection of how suffering has not only persisted but intensified and spread until famine has begun to emerge," said IPC, which is backed by the United Nations (UN). According to UN data, the prolonged conflict has severely crippled food production and distribution, and over 300,000 children under five are now at risk of acute malnutrition. The Gaza Strip remains under a total Israeli blockade, with only minimal aid permitted to enter. Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that current aid levels fall far short of what is required to meet even the most basic needs of the population. The situation is further exacerbated by violence surrounding aid distribution. The Israeli-U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which operates outside the UN framework, has been linked to a string of deadly incidents. Palestinian health officials report that over 1,400 civilians have been killed near GHF aid sites, with Israeli forces accused of deliberately firing on crowds of desperate civilians. Gaza's Health Ministry also added that dozens have died from starvation in recent weeks, including at least two people in the past 24 hours. The total death toll from hunger now stands at 271, including 112 children. In turn, the IPC report warns that the famine is expected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis by the end of September. If the current trajectory continues, more than 640,000 people will face Phase 5 conditions – the most severe classification of hunger crisis. "As this famine is entirely man-made, it can be halted and reversed," the report said. "The time for debate and hesitation has passed; starvation is present and is rapidly spreading. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that an immediate, at-scale response is needed." It warned that without an immediate and sustained ceasefire, along with unrestricted access to humanitarian aid and food for the entire Gaza Strip, "avoidable deaths will increase exponentially."

Israel denies crisis in Gaza

Brighteon.AI's Enoch defines man-made famine as a deliberate or negligent human action that leads to widespread food scarcity and starvation, often used as a tool of control or punishment. It can be achieved through policies that restrict food production, distribution or access or by creating conditions that prevent people from growing or obtaining food, such as through war, economic sanctions or environmental manipulation. But despite all the evidence and the declaration, Israel still denies that famine has overtaken the strip. "The entire IPC document is based on Hamas lies laundered through organizations with vested interests. There is no famine in Gaza," Israel's foreign ministry wrote on its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Over 100,000 trucks of aid have entered Gaza since the start of the war, and in recent weeks a massive influx of aid has flooded the Strip with staple foods and caused a sharp decline in food prices, which have plummeted in the markets." (Related: Netanyahu denies Gaza famine, claims detained Palestinians are "overweight" while Gaza children die from hunger.) Despite repeated warnings from humanitarian agencies and on-the-ground organizations, the international response remains muted. Aid convoys face repeated delays and obstructions, and diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire have stalled. Follow Starvation.news for more news about the famine unfolding in Gaza.
