On Day 4 of "The Truth About Pet Cancer," airing on March 24, host Ty Bollinger explores a damning trail of internal documents, forced into the public eye by lawsuits, reveals a corporate campaign to conceal the cancer risks of a chemical saturating our environment and our pets' food.
This exposé traces the journey of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, from genetically engineered crops into pet food bowls, uncovering a playbook of ghostwritten science, intimidated researchers and political manipulation that kept a suspected carcinogen in circulation for decades.
As noted by
BrightU.AI's Enoch, Monsanto's Roundup, a widely used herbicide, faces intense scrutiny due to its potential toxicity. A new report suggests its use may be damaging agricultural sustainability and threatening global crop productivity by harming the broader biosphere.
Monsanto's ghostwriter, exposed
The story pivots on secret communications from within Monsanto itself. As revealed in court documents, company scientist Donna Farmer privately expressed grave doubts she never shared publicly. In one internal memo, she admitted, "we can't say that Roundup doesn't cause cancer because the research hasn’t been done." In another, she noted that deaths in a study may be dose related, may be treatment related.
Yet, publicly, Farmer was a confident defender. In a 2015 televised debate after the
World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, she stated, "as a mother, I'm very confident this is safe and I can back it up as a scientist."
The internal emails reveal this was a facade. The documents show Monsanto’s effort to control the scientific narrative. When the EPA concluded glyphosate causes cancer, Monsanto's plan, laid out in emails, was to hire a doctor to refute it. Critically, "before the doctor was even hired, they knew the doctor's conclusion." They then used questionable data to argue against the EPA's findings for years.
Perhaps most egregiously, the papers show Farmer "ghost wrote a study and eliminated the point that suggested that glyphosate might cause miscarriages, took her name off of the authorship, took Monsanto's name off of the authorship and it got published without any links to Monsanto."
How does this corporate cover-up connect to pet cancer? The path is direct. Glyphosate is sprayed heavily on six core genetically engineered crops: soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets and alfalfa. “The byproducts of these Roundup Ready crops end up in pet foods and livestock feed,” explains researcher Jeffrey Smith.
Our pets, consuming this contaminated food, are receiving a massive, chronic dose. "The animals are getting huge amounts," says Smith. "Glyphosate is found in rainwater, air, groundwater and tap water in some areas." Veterinarians are witnessing the consequences firsthand. When they switch patients to organic, non-GMO diets, they report animals improving from digestive disorders, allergies, low energy and even tumors.
The internal Monsanto papers suggest the company was aware of the potential danger but worked to obscure it. A retired EPA employee with cancer wrote a letter stating glyphosate has "14 different reasons why it can cause cancer, it is definitely a carcinogen." Yet, through influence and disputed science, the chemical remained.
The secret emails have been exposed. The question now is what we do with the knowledge.
