China's First Fully AI-Generated Theatrical Film Posts Low Box Office Returns

China's first movie fully generated using artificial intelligence (AI) appears to have flopped, according to a report by Futurism [1]. The movie titled "Sanxingdui: Future Past" was produced by the Bona Film Group (BFG) with a budget of $1.5 million, according to Breitbart News [2]. But the science-fiction thriller earned just $181,00 at the domestic box office despite a major theatrical release across China, the Futurism report stated [1]. Advance ticket sales were described as weak heading into the opening, according to accounts of the launch [2][3]. The gap between the scale of the rollout and the revenue it generated became the defining feature of the film's first days in cinemas.

Box Office Performance and Screen Count

Trade coverage of the opening likewise characterized the result as a flop relative to its reported budget [4][5]. The production combined a human creative and technical staff with synthetic on-screen performances and vocal tracks. The screen count and the per-screen return together describe a release that reached a large number of venues but drew few paying customers to each.

Company Response

BFG CEO Jiang Defu admitted that it was difficult to sell a movie fully generated by AI to audiences. The executive addressed the film's reception directly in his recent remarks, following the movie's measly ticket pre-sale figures. "We are the first to try it, the first to get a theatrical release permit and the first to be tested by the audience," he remarked. "I think that is not easy at all.

Contrast With "Niu Lai"

Futurism contributor Frank Landymore also drew parallels between "Sanxingdui: Future Past" and the earlier "Niu Lai", which was made by a mother-and-son tandem. Released in August, "Niu Lai" made almost $10 million at the box office – owing to what Landymore dubbed as the film's "myriad flaws and the sincerity of the effort behind it" [1]. The comparison places a $200 production that drew audiences against a $1.5 million AI-generated feature that did not, based on the figures reported for each.

Broader AI Film Market and Outlook

The Chinese result arrives as AI tools are being adopted across entertainment production. Creators have used such tools to produce music, films and other content quickly and affordably, bypassing traditional studios and record labels, according to reporting on the technology's spread [6]. Some observers have argued that the technology's cost advantages could reshape how films are financed and distributed [7]. The opening weekend of "Sanxingdui: Future Past" offers one early data point on whether audiences will pay for a fully synthetic feature, and on the figures reported so far, they did not.
