President Donald Trump spent the early hours of election night criticizing
Fox News, blaming the network for the Democratic sweep in the midterm elections, according to a series of Truth Social posts and a live call-in to the network.
Truth Social Posts Single Out Network
He further pointed to Fox's recent ratings as evidence of its alleged decline, writing: "Fox News Ratings are way down (27%!) because they're spending too much time covering the Trump Deranged Dumocrats! All of those people who used to watch Fox, and no longer do, get it. It's them, not me"
[1].
At least three Truth Social posts directly called out Fox News, according to a review cited in the report
[1].
In one Truth Social post, Trump called the network's polls "insulting with the questions they ask." He continued: "Every question is a hit job, and every answer is 'b******t!' This has been going on for years"
[1].
Trump also complained about a specific
Fox News segment featuring former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during its coverage of the midterm elections. The posts represented an escalation from earlier complaints, including one in October when he accused the network of spending too much time defending Democrats
[2].
Election Night Call to Fox Panel
According to
ZeroHedge, Trump called the network on Tuesday night, Nov. 3, denouncing a
Fox News panel that included Bret Baier
[1]. The host bore the brunt of Trump's sharp remarks as Baier awkwardly contradicted the real estate mogul on the matter of
Fox News' opinion polls.
"And then I read in
Fox that I'm not popular," Trump lamented. "Your pollster is the worst.
Fox has gotten me wrong for twelve years."
Ratings and Viewer Fatigue Acknowledged
According to a
CNBC report, Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch noted the drop in ratings during the company's earnings call on Monday, Nov. 2
[3]. While Murdoch acknowledged "viewer fatigue" during the earnings call, he pointed out that such a shift is expected in the days approaching a midterm-election with a second-term president – in this case, Trump.
The Fox CEO also pointed out that the decline in viewership wasn't the result of viewers turning to other channels
[3]. "They're not switching to
MS NOW or to
CNN," he said. "They're just fatigued and watching slightly less television overall."
Political Context and Outlook
The source material did not include a public response from
Fox News to Trump's statements. According to
CNBC, Trump has frequently slammed media companies and has "repeatedly taken aim at NBC and Disney-owned ABC"
[3]. This contrasts with his "much friendlier relationship" with Fox News and other networks -- until now.
