“The faster we reopen, the lower the economic cost — but the higher the human cost, because the more lives lost,” the governor said. “That, my friends, is the decision we are really making.”
According to Cuomo, his plan avoids the trade-off between economic and human costs, because it will be controlled by officials constantly monitoring fatalities and hospitalizations. Cuomo also reported that the state had 230 deaths Tuesday. This number is slightly up from the previous day, but far lower than the daily peak of 799 on April 8. The state has had more than 19,000 deaths from the coronavirus since the pandemic began. The state total, however, does not include more than 5,300 New York City deaths that were blamed on the virus but were not verified in lab tests.
New York's hospitalization rates also continued to drop, with only 659 new admissions reported Monday -- the lowest number since March. Overall, the state has seen 9,600 patients hospitalized from the virus.
