Rep. Mike Gallagher demands Fauci resign or be fired for lying about US funding of Wuhan lab's covid development

Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher has called on White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci to resign or be fired for lying to the American public about the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). Gallagher, who has represented Wisconsin's eighth congressional district since 2017, believes the nation's supposed top infectious disease expert lied about how the United States government supported gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China. The representative's accusation comes after documents obtained by The Intercept show that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which Fauci leads, funded experiments at the WIV that make coronaviruses "more pathogenetic than the original virus." Fauci repeatedly lied about the US supporting coronavirus experiments in Wuhan

"On May 12, I argued that Dr. Fauci had not been forthcoming about the U.S. government's support for gain-of-function research at the WIV. These documents are a smoking gun that indicate he not only failed to be forthcoming, but that he also lied to the American people about his organization's support for this risky research," said Gallagher in a statement released on Wednesday, Sept. 8. "Thanks to the grant reports written by Peter Daszak, we now know that U.S. taxpayer dollars supported research that made a virus at the WIV stronger than the original, naturally-occurring virus. This meets the very threshold for gain-of-function research that Dr. Fauci outlined in a letter to me in July," continued Gallagher's statement. "He has repeatedly lied before Congress and the American people and should immediately resign. But his resignation is not enough. Congress must also conduct a thorough investigation into this research and the way in which these grants were issued to ensure no bureaucrat is able to hide behind lawyerly definitions and skirt regulations like this again," concluded the statement. In an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday, Gallagher reiterated his support for Fauci resigning or being fired. He said the fact that the doctor still has a job "is an affront to the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have suffered, if not died under coronavirus." The representative also denounced how mainstream media outlets in the U.S. uncritically accepted Fauci and others' denunciations of the lab leak theory. He said the media has acted as "useful idiots" for the Chinese Communist Party. "And they're afraid to admit that they were wrong," he said. Gallagher even pointed out that Fauci recently conducted an interview with mainstream media outlet CNN. This interview did not ask Fauci about The Intercept's report even though it occurred after the results of the investigation were published. "Because the entire media has gone hook, line and sinker for this narrative," said Gallagher. "We had scientists who had profound conflicts of interest, who were writing letters telling everybody this didn't come from a lab, and the media went for it." Gallagher said that Fauci should, at a minimum, step down from his positions as the director of NIAID and as chief medical advisor to the White House. He then insisted that there should be a full and transparent investigation to figure out "the complex web of U.S. taxpayer dollars" that have funded gain-of-function research in China and other parts of the world. Fauci has acknowledged that the NIAID and the National Institutes of Health had provided funding to the Wuhan lab. But he has repeatedly denied that the money was used to support gain-of-function research on coronaviruses. "That categorically was not done," said Fauci back in May when first confronted with these claims. In a July letter addressed to Gallagher, which was written as a reply to one of the congressman's earlier letters, Fauci said the NIAID-funded studies at the WIV "did not propose to manipulate the viruses in a way that would increase transmissibility or pathogenicity."
